my only problem with MST is that when it say it is fully defrag and it is not in Perfect Disk 7. And i haven't use MST long enough to say it is good yet.

My comment is Perfect Disk 7 brings the best performance after defrag. ( Offline then online )

i don't understand the logic behind O&O defrag methodlogy, may be it is better suited for server.
Disk Keeper is good for Background running ( if you like it that way. ) Personally i don't like something running in background wasting memory And always defragging.

However i am now investigating which does more HD operation. Background Auto defrag or One time defrag.

Probably the 'one-time defrag' as it will be issued a higher priority.

If you use background mode, less need to carry out a full defrag ;) I only carry out a full defrag now after major installs/uninstalls.
It does its job and it can also reposition your page file.
Not really. You can hear it occasionally defragging for a few seconds in the background and as stated previously, it has virtually no effect on memory usage/performance.

Still using windows defragmentor here. That may possibly change soon. It's getting very slow.

I am as well, and agree with you, I shall have a look at a few of those on trial, thats the only way I purchase them now.

Is Diskkeeper 8 fully functional on trial?

    Is that an understatement?

Yes, I believe the time has come to delete my Norton Speed Disk, and don the colours of another trendy memory block organiser.

You will find that this is normal behaviour when you run one defrag program after another. This is because all of them have slightly different ways in which they organise files during defragmentation. Run a different defragmenter after the first has reported no fragmented files and this one will now state that your Disc still needs defragging!
Same here, but it looks promising.

Overall, however, I must say that a defragmenter is not an essential program, particularly a commercial one. The Windows internal defragger seems to do a reasonable job without any additional help. In fact, most 'average' people I know have never run any defragger in the life of their computer!

I'd really like to know what's 'wrong' with the defragger in windows XP?

I think the main concern in my point of view is the speed at which it is able to re-organise the memory allocations. It's an extremely slow defragger in comparison to Norton Speed Disk (hence the name), and sometimes... well, sometimes BigBuck... you just feel the neeed. The NEEED FOR SPEED!

How slow is slow Mish? I just ran it just to see...and it took 2mins. Admittedly I only ran it the other day. But, even if things were heavily fragmented (ie. installed quite a bit of new SW, deleted a heap of pics/screenshots) it would still only take 15mins or so. How fast are we talking?
    Cheers,
    Brad.

Ok. First of all, what hard-disk do you use (what rpm is it? does it use S-ATA, ATA [IDE], SCSI?)? Secondly, what CPU are you using?

These are variables in an equation which ultimately dictates how fast your drive will defragment. Also, in order to compare the defragmentation with anyone else, mine and the other person's hard-drive would have to be in exactly the same state, so it's pretty much impossible to test via these forums.

My stats are in my signature below. On average when I run the Windows Defragmenter with the 74Gb Raptor, my drive takes about 15 mins to complete the process. With Norton, my drive takes about 7 to 10 mins.

And you say it only takes 2 minutes to defragment your 80Gb hard-drive?? Oh man, then there's something seriously wrong if mine takes longer but I have a 2.8Ghz P4 and a 10,000rpm hard-disk @ 74Gb.

Maybe I can get a third opinion?

It may be that I don't often let it get too bad?? last week I did it and it was pretty badly fragmented...I hadn't defragged for a while & I'd done a few SW installations and deleted a fair bit of stuff....but I'm sure it did it under 20mins. The HDD is only a quarter full too??

Yeah, you got 55Gb/s free. I got 72% full, so I think that might be why. I just ran a defrag, and it took over 10 mins, but not more than 20.

BC, I must say that this is probably the first post I've ever seen from you that I disagree with! ;)

I used to think the same thing, but I wouldn't be without DK on my Windows boxes any more. Compared to something like DK or PD, the built-in 'fraggers are best described as "pitiful", IMO.

Boy, are you ever right about THAT! And the pc's I work on show it! :D

I use O&O Defrag Pro or PerfectDisk...

Trying the mst Defrag Home Edition. Seems very good and very easy on resources :)
