    Generally McAfee is not free. But since I got it free from my bank I posted it as my free AV :thumb:

    Plus it is free from AOL.

    Between a good product and excellent tech support (especially their forums), I think Alwil's idea is that enough users will upgrade to Pro just for some additional convenience and also as a sort of donation to keep things going (at Alwil's end).

    Other than script blocking, there are no security extras in the Pro version, the home version (which I've used for something like 6 or 8 years now) includes all the protection. What Pro offers is mainly convenience features, like being able to schedule scans or define "tasks".

    (Edit) Almost forgot - another niche the Pro version fills is if you're running any kind of business, even non-profit or at home, where using the home version would be cheating them.

    I haven't used an AV since October 2007. I occasionally scan my systems for my peace of mind with Avira. If I decided to use an AV again, it would certainly be Avira (free or paid).

    I rarely need bother with any AV's anymore but i still depend on Avast! when doing research as far as a "free" AV is concerned.

    I found them quite reliable enough stretching all the way back to Windows 98/Me days.

    Avast 4.8.
    Always run without significant problem. Excellent forum.
    Unlike others, I have no problem waiting for V5; 4.8 is more than good enough.

    Personally I use Eset NOD32 Antivirus, but for any family or friends who want good virus protection without spending the money I always recommend Avira Antivir Personal.

    I voted Avira, but like BigC I also get McAfee AV Plus from my ISP. So both are free to me really ;)

    I am now using Avira Antivir together with Avast! ;)

    (the latter without the normal resident scanner, just all the stuff Antivir free is missing)

    PiCo;

    MoonSecure is a dressed-up version of Clam AV with a resident scanner and newer looking GUI; I believe it's still available for download at Softpedia and Fileforum.
    Several months ago they claimed major improvements were imminent, but I've not bothered to try it again. Clam AV just misses too much in tests and I don't trust it as my main antivirus.

    -Anyway-

    I have several hard drives and each has a different antivirus.
    My choice is Avast free by a hair over Avira free, but my absolute favorite is Avast free with Avira free as a second opinion, on-demand only scanner (guard not installed).

    I also run PC Tools and Comodo ISS (with Avira free on-demand only), plus several paid applications;
    -Norton ISS 2009.
    -Avira Security Suite (6 month trial).
    -Avast Professional (with ZA free firewall).
    -Zone Alarm Internet Security Suite 2009.
    -Kaspersky Internet Security Suite ver. 7.

    Although not currently installed, I also have the paid versions of Bitdefender Internet security 2008, Trend micro Antivirus + Antispyware 2008, KIS ver. 6, and a one year free trial for A-Squared with antivirus (Ikarus).

    -Finally;
    NO AVG. Don't like it, don't trust it.

    Amen! I recently ditched Bit Defender as an on-demand scanner and I am now ultra happy with Avira Free in its place. :thumb:
