I have been looking around for some encryption software to lock files and folders I need to send to customers. Ideally the software should be able to make files that can self decrypt so the other user does not have to install any additional software. All they would need is the password to unlock the file/s. I think Winzip can do stuff like that but are there any other good ones?

That sounds easy enough. As you suggested, many archivers can do what you want. All you need to do is create a self-extracting exe and then encrypt it with a password. My program of choice is 7zip.

I don't know if I'd trust an archiving program to do my encryption.

You may want to take a look at this thread, specifically post #7 by Justin.

I recommend that you take a look at WinZip, which can create AES 256-bit self-extracting archives.

Does Truecrypt encrypt files or only hard drives? My impression was it did mainly hard drives but maybe I am wrong about that.

    Has anyone tried jetico's BCArchive?
