I dont see why an AV would not be compatible with Windows 8.1. Isn't it just Windows 8 Service Pack + some subtle changes?

I'm not in front of my W8.1 machine at the moment, but I know you can remove the association with a Microsoft (Hotmail) account once the system is up and running. I *think* it's under your User Account setting (in Control Panel), and I think it's called making your account a "local" one. I did it on my machine, so I know it works.

As for not having to enter your password when you start, have you tried "control userpasswords2" from a command prompt window running w/ Administrator rights? (It opens a control panel that lets you set which account logs in and whether a password is needed.) That worked for Windows 7, and I was planning to try it with 8.1 when I have a chance...

I can see how to make my account a "standard account", but that's it. I believe there is also the option to create a NEW local account, but I already tried that and it was hard to get all my files/settings over to it.

regarding the password command, I already unchecked the box for requiring passwords. It didn't do anything.

It'll be interesting to see the test results on the new Windows Defender in Windows 8.1. Supposedly they've beefed up the behavioral analysis, and they do a bit of "cloud" analysis on suspicious files.

    (See -http://video.ch9.ms/sessions/teched/eu/2013/WCA-B370.pptx- )

I must say, on my test box running the Windows 8.1 preview, you would barely know Windows Defender is even there. The user controls have been reduced to the bare minimum - you can't even set a scan schedule or an update schedule. (It decides when to do either of those - of course, you can force either one manually via the control panel.) It doesn't even have a traybar icon anymore. Honestly, for the typical non-technical user, I think that's the right approach - fewer choices make for fewer mistakes.

But will the test results be any better? We'll have to wait and see...

Yeah. Any time I've tested Windows Defender, I have barely noticed its there either! And that's not a good thing! lol

I've gone back to 8.0. Too many issues between programs and Win8.1. Hopefully things get cleared up by it's official release.

Was it stable aside from security software?

The OS by itself was probably ok, but a lot of third party program are not yet fully compatible. I got sick of installing, reinstalling, repairing, etc. the OS. I'm done with it for now, and will wait until the third parties update their software for it.
