Anyone know? I tried Comodo FW, and it did not load properly. I want to install an AV, but don't want to clutter the new Windows install with more programs that will not work.

I only hope that by pushing Windows 8.1 as an update later in the year, it won't break too many programs that are working well with Win 8. All these changes lately are becoming a big pain in the back.

I can say I regret updating to it so far. Thought it would be more seamless, but finding issues with programs. Also they make you use a MS account to sign in. I live alone, and normally don't like having my PC password protected. Now I have to login every time as if I'm at work. ugh

    So far:
    Win 8+Classic shell > Win 8.1

They will be even bigger pain in the back when AVs and other security software will become incompaitble for months at a time. Just like the more frequent release cycle of FF breaks security plugins from Kaspersky/Norton.

Windows 8 comes with Microsoft Windows Defender AV software, so do you need any additional?

Because using private software is almost always better, if it wasn't there would not be a market for it.

Agreed. I would rather use nothing at all, than Win Defender. About the same effectiveness without the resource drag.

this stinks and not in a good way i fear the worst sooner than later for many av companies.. especially if each time they upgrade now this starts to happen. tomm morning ill be able to test eset to see if its working for sure or not as well as most other av's.

Hopefully I can hold off on this update, at least until I hear some positive feedback about the new features and compatibilities of software.

I try this when I get home tonight. I just know that during install,8.1 mandated I use my MS account, where Win8 would let me bypass that during setup, and not have my computer linked to my MS account.

When companies has made their products compatible with Win8(more or less), they need to start over with Win 8.1 and so the saga continues :)

Security is being beefed up in 8.1
    - Defender with Behavior Monitoring
    - Automatic Encryption for System Drive (not sure if it is available to old systems, any one can confirm?)
    - IE11, the way activeX works, binary extensions,..
    - PC health service...? Cant find more details on it.

I guess, much is being changed at underlying level, making security vendors to change how their AV works. I suspect one reason is 3rd bullet stated above. I could be wrong, perhaps with more knowledgeble can throw more light on the above areas..:)

Hello everyone.. I am new here. Very new.

Anyway, from what I have read so far Kaspersky IS 2013 is not compatible with the 8.1 Preview at this time.

Ok, I tried this, and it does still work......kind of. With creating a new account, I lost most the programs I installed, and settings. I tried to copy them over, which worked a bit, but having a lot of issues. Also, it seems like in Windows 8.1, if you want to use Skydrive, you have to use a MS account. Where in Win8.0, you could just install Skydrive for the desktop. Installing it in Win 8.1 does seem to work. I've tried several times. It would seem MS really wants to force your into linking your PC/login to you MS profile, which I hate.
