Yes, they have superb detection... It's hard to say that they're the best... But I think they're the best player atm for desktops :)

Past results suggest that virus detection rate is top notch; http://www.virus.gr/english/fullxml/default.asp?id=67&mnu=67

Although this is not shown in the overall record over at Virus Bulletin; http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/archives/products.xml?fsecure.xml

but recent ITW results since June 2002 have been excellent.

while trojan detection is also not too bad; http://illusivesecurity.il.funpic.de/viewtopic.php?t=18

Thats because Kaspersky is ahead on updates remember? So the latest updates are delivered to KAV first - thats why it is better than F-Secure in most tests. But in the real world F-Secure is better than KAV.

Because the tests use both virus and trojan samples, KAV comes out ahead due to updates. F-Secure does release updates faster than KAV sometimes but they are only good for viruses, F-Secure team is not good at Trojans. As a result, F-Secure has to wait for KAV trojan updates and this costs them in the tests.

But the KAV engine is a 'modified' one and the previous F-Prot engine was dropped in the latest version of F-Secure.

The present 3 engines are the modified Kaspersky engine and the two in-house engines, Libra and Orion.

What good will two (or three) engines do you if they detect the same malware. :D

All I can say is that you cannot infer that F-Secure by itself will give exactly the same detection results as the 'real' KAV plus any other AV engine.

These modified programs will differ for example in speed of updating.

Further, I have no idea whether the latest F-secure AV is better in malware detection than the previous one. But I am sure that the F-Secure Corporation would state that the 2005 version is at least as good as the 2004 program!

If you are comfortable with the product, it does not slow down the performance of your computer and you are happy with the price, then it is a good choice for you.

Well F-Secure is just as good as KAV - at the least, and otherwise it is better thanks to Ad-Aware database too...

All Windows Updates are totally unecessary as long as he has a firewall!? That's crap! Who would believe that!? Ask any computer security expert and see what the say 'bout this.
Internet Explorer is totally safe and does not need to be tweaked in any way. A whole bunch of nonsense! That guy at the computer repair obviously does not know all the 'holes' in IE. IE is full of 'holes' everywhere. Security holes that is. Use an alternative browser and forget about IE.

Jotti's is another site that also uses multiple AVs to scan uploaded files.

Shall we laugh or shall we cry that the end users are being conned by such so-called experts?

Cry. Indeed. :doubt: Sad to say, some so-called experts love conning end-users. These so-called experts always lie instead of tellin' the truth. I don't trust what those tech-support guys or people at computer shops say, because from what they say, I know they're lying to me.
