Thank you Hipgnosis. Can you also show what the System Tray Icon looks like?

I think this is a great FW with nice extras, but does anyone think it would be any advantage to switch from Online Armor Free to WDF?

    Hi,Hipgnosis

May I suggest that you turn on Process Monitor.

OA includes HIPS processes, over & above its FW. If you are not using the HIPS, then OA might be a bit heavier due to the dead weight. OR -- does anyone know if OA can be installed such that the firewall ONLY is installed?

You can make it so only the firewall is *active* but not so the firewall is the only thing that is installed.

However, with OAFree we don't actually load up the things for webshield, mailshield (the removed components). We still have the OA Driver so that OAFree maintains the same leaktest performance as OA Full.

I would tend to think WDF when DSA is enabled, would offer somewhat better protection than OA Free. However OA Free has to be the more stable and reliable of the two, not to mention it's most important component, which is Mike.

Spot on:thumb: except I cannot see any stability or reliability problems with WDF whatsoever

Mike was straightforward enough to say that Mailshield and Webshield aren't present in OA free, whereas the equivalent of both of these are presumably active in WDF/DSA

Probably everyone knows how good the paid version is,however.

    Thanks for popping in,Mike:D

Hairy Coo. Know anything about how well WDF works if you have a Wireless Adapter? I experienced lost connections with a few earlier releases of PC Tools FW. Also does anyone know if WDF uninstalls all right, and doesn't cause any problems like Winsock troubles? Not sure I'm ready to give up OA Free, but just in case these things would be nice to know. I have read about how some FW installs have created more trouble than they were worth.

WDF uninstalls just fine. I had loaded it on a test box earlier for the primary reason of providing those screenshots. It has now been uninstalled.

Thank you Hipgnosis. How did you find WDF compared to others you may have tried? Also any input on using it on a Wireless PC?

Regret I havent the knowledge about the Wireless matter, but second what Hipgnosis says about the troublefree uninstall-for me its completely troublefree and reliable no matter what.

I can see you don't want to uninstall OA and lose all the settings etc,but why dont you try a virtual app like Sandboxie or Returnil, which may allow running both-not quite sure if that will succeed however.o_O

However even if you uninstall/reinstal OA,you can still use the same key as the original.

Another approach may be to try to run both, but exit and disable OA-this sometimes works for me long enough to get some idea whats going on.

Thank you Hairy Coo. I like the GUI of WDF and the idea of more protection. However, I do worry about the DSA part. Do you think DSA is safe for an average user like myself, and can anything be screwed up by running WDF with DSA enabled? I appreciate everyones help by the way.

Once you have enabled DSA you just get normal firewall style popups,(in addition to the others)which really wouldnt be a problem with a user of your knowledge.

I have a feeling that the current WDF/DSA has somewhat less popups than the previous original

After a while, depending on your setup, the popups reduce drastically.

In my estimation,WDF is one of the most user friendly firewalls, which the average user can use without any problems .

From memory, its no more complicated than The PC Firewall or OA!

    GO FOR IT!!

I just may, but I am such a loyal type that I will feel bad doing so considering the recent gift of OA Free. LOL. I image if I do install WDF and enable DSA, I wouldn't need an Antispyware or any other HIPS correct? I use AVG for my AV and currently have a-squared AM running while using Firefox as my browser.

You wont need another HIPS but will still need antispyware and antivirus of course.

All right then. I'm going to go to bed now and dream about Firewalls. Wait that was last night. I guess it will be Antispyware programs tonight. LOL. Thanks again for all your help Hairy Coo. And to you Hipgnosis.
