After installing True Image 9.1 with Universal Restore on a SBS 2003 server NT Backup fails with the following errors.

    Backup Status
    Operation: Backup
    Active backup destination: File
Media name: "Small Business Server Backup (01).bkf created
    04/10/2006 at 9:59 PM"

Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:80042306

    And the event log shows:

    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: VSS
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 12293
    Date: 04/11/2006

    User: N/A
    Computer: EXCHANGESERVER
    Description:

Reverting to non-shadow copy backup mode.

After uninstalling True Image, NT backup works.

I have recieved the following advice on updateing the VSS Service

    For SBS 2003 SP0:

A Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) update package is available for ...
    http://support.microsoft.com/?id=833167

A Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) update-2 package is available
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;887827

    For SBS 2003 SP1:

Update is available that fixes various Volume Shadow Copy Service issues in
    Windows Server 2003
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;891957

    2. Can the backup be successfully performed by Ntbackup (utilizing the
BKS file created by the wizard)?

    3. Disable the Exchange writer by editing the registry under
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeIS\Parameters

Will the updates fix the problem ?

    Hello Ross,

Thank you for choosing Acronis Server Disk Backup Software.

First of all, please make sure that you use the latest build (3567) of the respective Acronis True Image version which is available at: http://www.acronis.com/enterprise/support/updates/

You can find the full version name and build number by going to Help -> About... menu in the main program window.

To get access to updates you should create an account at:

then log in and use your serial number to register your software.

Note that should create new Bootable Rescue CD after installing the update.

If the problem still persists after installing the update then please create Acronis Report and Windows System Information as it is described in Acronis Help Post.

Please submit a request for technical support. Attach the files created to your request along with the step-by-step description of the actions taken before the problem appears and the link to this thread. We will investigate the problem and try to provide you with the solution.

I had the exact same Event ID show (Event ID: 12293) up and NT backup failing to acccess VSS.

Seemed to start after SP1 was applied to a clean installed SBS 2003 server. I can confirm that the latest build of TI 9.1 (3567) has fixed this problem on my SBS box....

    SRW :)

The version of True Image was the trial version installed on March 20. To fix the problem with NT Backup True Image was uninstalled. SBS Service Pac 1 and the above listed VSS hot fix have been installed. The 15 day trial version has expired. Is it possible to get trial version reactivated so i can finish the evaluation on the customers server.

Satus of VSS problem. I updated the SBS Server with SP1 and the VSS hot fix recommended by Microsoft. The SBS default NT Backup completes with no errors. Yea! Acronis True Image also completes with no errors.Yea Yea!!

But in the SBS Monitor there is one error reported. The error is "Auto-started services not running" service name Acronis VSS Provider. The service will start if try to start it manualy and it does not seem to be an issue with either NT backup or True Image.

Is Acronis VSS Provider service being automaticaly unloaded and loaded as necessary? If so then the SBS monitor is reporting a false error.

    Hello rossm1,

Please note that Acronis VSS support is an optional feature (you can select this option when you create a backup). It is not active by default. Additional information can be found in Chapter 5.3 "Setting backup options" Acronis True Image 9.1 Server for Windows User Guide.

    Thank you.

Thanks for the information. I did read the manual and can see how to enable/disable the VSS option. SBS monitor was correct in seeing a service marked as Automatic Start that was not started. Not a problem.

There is still a problem with trying to use True Image to do a VSS backup and also using SBS NT backkup to do a VSS backup also. True Image VSS backup completes but NT Backup fails.

For now I am going to stop the VSS backup in True Image and let NT Backup capture the VSS image.

    Thanks

    Ross

    Hello Ross,

We are sorry for the delay with the response.

Please be aware that this issue is already known. It will certainly be fixed in the future Acronis True Image builds. I'm afraid that the exact time frame for the fix to be implemented is not decided yet. Please accept our apologies for the current inconvenience.

    Thank you.
