    Hello,

Quick question: Will VMWare Workstation run smoothly on a laptop with 1.73GHz Core 2 Duo and 2GB RAM? The OS is Windows Vista SP1.

Specifically, will I be able to comfortably run a virtual machine with the above specs? I will eventually try it myself to see whether it runs okay on my machine or not.

I am planning to install Linux distributions, and Windows OS (XP/7).

    Thanks!

    Hello,
as i have found out using windows vista with 2gb of ram even with not allocating much memory to the virtual machine you soon run out of memory and have slowdowns.
is the host 32bit or 64bit vista?
try to get 4gb of ram if possible.
    look on the crucial site

According to HP, my laptop can only handle 2GB of RAM (1GB per slot). I am tempted to try replacing one stick with a 2GB one to see if it will work. However, doing so might mess up the electronics, which I definitely don't want to happen.

The host is a 32-bit Vista Business SP1. I tried 64-bit before, but since I only have 2GB I see no reason to continue using it.

    Hello,

To answer your question, you need to ask the following:

How much ram is currently taken?
Are you running an anti-virus software?
How much ram do you intend to give to your vms?
Which vms do you intend to run?
How many of these do you intend to run simultaneously?
Do you intend to place the vms on the same partition as os, or another partition on the same drive, or another drive?
What is the speed of the os hard disk, hard disk that will contain vms?

    A benchmark:

A comp of mine, dual core, amd 64-bit 3800+ running xp sp3 32-bit, 2gb ram, 2 250gb 7,200rpm wd sata, with vms on second/external hds, no crap software installed: I can comfortably run 2 512mb vms without any issues and even 3 vms with 512mb with just slight sluggishness.

    Mrk

I think I'll just wait until I get a desktop. Currently, I only have laptops, which aren't really that powerful.

Thanks for the input, anyway. :)
