If you are running VMWare - let's say on Linux and you are hosting a Windows session, does the Linux part become inactive? I was thinking you might have some calendar program running. Would it be able to pop up a reminder, or would that only be when you returned to Linux, and would the email still be collected in Linux?

The host operating system is not inactive when the guest os is running. In other words both os are active. If you have configured to run your guest at full screen view than you may not see any notification from your host os even though it pops up any notification.
