    Hello,

I have tested Vista on a machine running 512MB RAM and 128MB graphic memory and it worked well ...

    BUT

It worked twice as well with XP on the same machine. That's the major issue here! To say nothing of Linux, oh boy, WARP 10 engage.

From my experience (about 2 months of experimenting), you get something that is obviously Microsoft and will not be too hard to master, but some things have changed, in order to annoy people.

Why the same layout could not have been kept? Why people have to learn a new infrastructure all over again, when it's basically the same thing? Unless moving the furniture about, the phang shwei thingie, is the whole of MS dogma:

"We got nothing new, so here's a bit of colors, new titles for menus, whoa"

So, it's visual and "territorial" annoyance for people who know where and what to click in XP and such ... no increase in performance, on the contrary.

Finally, security - totally irrelevant since WF / non-MS stuff is enough..

Drivers and such ... well, this is the real issue. Closed-source software, if something doesn't work, then you're like proper screwed.

    Mrk

    thanks for the replys.
it is as i thought some people satisfied with vista and others hate it for being really slow and rubbish.
it sounds like windows ME all over again.
i think i will play it safe and get xp again since i know everything will work as it should.
im sure people had these type of problems when windows xp first came out but i wouldnt know since i got windows xp home just after SP2 came out.
if it wasnt for cleartype and a few other things i think i would even concider using windows 2000 pro SP4.
since i hardly use any microsoft stuff i might as well get XP rather than getting vista and stripping half of it out.

I'd stick with XP for now, "better the devil you know" and all that. I explored a windows media center laptop, and it still crashes all over the place when running the media center. When msft do something bad, they do it really bad, from what I've read the jury's still out on Vista.

If ever these OS's lead to nothing better, its maybe time to have second thought on the other player MACINTOSH,their newest Intel Mac's can drive all your Windows app anyhow.

Today I took two images of my system partition, containing Windows only :
    1. First image was based on the original WinXPproSP2 CD = 892,000 KB.
    2. Second image was a fully patched WinXPproSP2 = 2,227,000 KB.
    Quite an increase.
I wonder how much winVISTA will increase during the years.

    Erik,

I delete the Uninstall folders from the Windows folder and also the download files from C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download. This greatly reduces the C: drive size.
