Is encryption worth the extra cost in upgrading to Vista?

Also, if the computer drives are encrypted, will a password be needed regularly to routinely run the machine?

    In a word: NO.
Third party programs are available to do the same thing, and do it with open-source technology.

Thanks. You just saved me some money.

I will go to a lower cost upgrade because I didn't see anything I need in the "Ultimate" version except the encryption.

Do you have the names of some of the third party applications?

    Many thanks,
