Given that many of those who use this site frequently advise others on such products it would be in Viper's interests to pay some heed. I have never used the product, but, given this discussion I would not consider using it in the future.

FWIW, I have sent email to the CEO, taking him up on his offer to "email me at any time". I provided a link to this thread and asked for his input. We'll see.

Unfortunately he had PC lifetime and GFI has apparently some very wide list of "causes of death" for the PC. :D

I guess it could be worse. They could have put a fan monitoring program too and if a fan stops spinning or you change it, it says "0 rpm detected at chassis fan! Your PC is dead! Our condolences!". Or "fan rpm doesn't match previous records. Your PC is dead. Hasta la vista, baby!" :D :argh:

    Vipre's lifetime lic. - definitely a dangerous 'false-positive.'

I guess this thread brings the statement "You get what you pay for" to a whole new level.

Vipre is buggy, and system heavy anyway - they won't last.

With practices like this, they are only accelerating their demise. Several companies offer fraudulent lifetimes like this - very misleading, Bit Defender does the same thing. Boycott these companies.

My name is John Letourneau and I manage the Technical Support organization for VIPRE Antivirus. The information that you were provided is incorrect. With the VIPRE PC Lifetime License you are entitled to 1 re-installation of the product on the original PC that VIPRE was installed on. This license is meant for the lifetime of the PC with the 1 re-installation taking place for any given reason (formatting the OS, replacing hardware). This license is not transferable to a new computer. This license is not a single use license but does have restrictions built in to prevent abuse. The situation you have outlined above is certainly not abuse.

Please email me directly at jletourneau(at)gfi(dot)com so that I may assist you further. I do apologize for this and any confusion that has came from this situation.

One loses the "1 re-installation" even by formatting and re-installing the OS? Wow, this gets better and better. o_O

    That is unacceptable.

Gettin' tired of the bait and switch. I picked up Stickypassword, and 2 months alter they released a version with fixes I need, and nullify my key. They want another $19 to activate the key for the slight version change. This is very slimy business, I don't trust any company that does this. Frankly, I think people in general have had enough of this kind of thing.

1 Re-Installation when some of us re-install 2-3 times or more a year? Wow.. I would be running a charge back on my CC for this. In fact I am in the process of getting my CC to charge back Spyshelter for their refusal to honor my license. Good thing about CC companies, they have no problem doing this! I'd go ahead and charge back Vipre on this one.

FYI, for anyone who might be interested, within 25 minutes of sending the CEO an email (on a Saturday), I received 2 responses from him. Since it is against TOS to post private emails, suffice it to say that he thanked me for bringing this to his attention and told me he'd get someone on it right away.

I for one, appreciate his responsiveness. I am not as quick as some here to condemn this company for what may or may not be a "lifetime" issue. I know that when I needed GFI to step up in the past, they have. I don't see the sense in over the top bashing of the product. Hopefully John Letourneau's offer to assist will be met with a degree of respect and appreciation. That always works better than bashing anyway.

My question is another. I can even try to understand that the HDD failing is "death of the PC". I mean, i don't like that, but they defined what's "PC's lifetime" and since they include HDD, i can see that as hardware death.

But i can't understand, how formatting, eats up 1 "PC death". I can't see why formatting has anything to do with the lifetime of a PC...

I am really forcing myself not to comment on the first part. I am just wondering, what about the thousand of Joes out there who didn't have the fortune of being Wilders' members. For them, neither bashing nor emailing will work, will it. Maybe they should put at the end of the EULA: "If you want your problems better solved, go register to Wilders, someone in there can get the CEO for you".

I doubt it as they make nearly all their bucks from the Enterprise/Business versions.

The PC Lifetime licensing model has been introduced to provide safety and security for the working life of a PC. The license provides peace-of-mind for customers seeking to have uninterrupted protection and significant savings over traditional licensing models which require annual subscriptions at a much higher cost. GFI offers protection for the working life of a PC (hence “PC Lifetime”) as a convenience and states on product literature (packaging, installation guides, website) the conditions under which the license is sold. The PC Lifetime model may not be suitable for some customers. Customers who frequently re-image or rebuild their PC may find the model limiting as GFI allows a one-time re-install of the VIPRE “PC Lifetime” license. Typically, however, a customer should enjoy PC Lifetime protection for the normal use of their PC. Fraud and abuse require GFI to place some reasonable restrictions on the terms and conditions of the license in order to continue to provide this convenient and popular protection to customers. GFI strives to support VIPRE with free technical support during this period. If there are extenuating circumstances under which a customer believes they should qualify for an additional re-install other than the one already provided by GFI, customers are encouraged to contact GFI by using one of the methods found at:

Out in left field Webroot purchased Prevx. VIPRE was Sunbelt and GFI now owns Sunbelt.

I still don't see the value. $80-$100 for a 'lifetime' license that stops anytime your PC farts.. When you can buy 10PC license for Vipre on Ebay and other places for $8-$10 per year. Where is the value?

I'd say it would be a good value if you provided 'activations', and limited the activations to a specific IP address cluster. Or perhaps a system like Bullguard where installation/limitations are tied to an account required to login and run the product on a PC. Seems to me you would do this if your intention was good, the way it is now you are assuming (correctly most likely) that the person will format/crash/upgrade their PC within a 1-3 year period. I think it's deceptive marketing.

Say what you will . Poor business practice . I will take a software that uses a key as many times as i need on 1 computer . Funny . I have an Outpost Pro Lifetime license and have to use it at least once a year for reformatting . Works wonderfully . Vipre' s model is ancient and AGAIN I would stay away from them . No reason to get caught up in a mess they are causing . They are not worth it .

If your company were not so paranoid about preventing abuse, you might just be selling more licenses. This scheme is definitely not for me since I rebuild often on the same PC. Talk to your devs and have them do it right. There are much bettter licensing schemes around than what you are offering.

The thing is, users don't necessarily need to rebuild/reimage their PCs for the PC Lifetime license to go down the toilete.

In fact, we're dealing with an antimalware solution, which will fail at some point in time, and more than once. So, these folks, regardless of being GFI/other are selling a product that promises to protect their users, but not only they fail doing it, as these very same users will see their licenses revoked, due to the one-reinstallation of the product permission? o_O Interesting approach... :D
