These features are all added layers of protection that aren't necessary but do improve security. With just Active Protection enabled and the firewall in Simple Mode VIPRE should prevent any threats from getting onto the system and prevent any incoming connections.

I would definitely suggest running the firewall in Learning Mode if possible as this does provide better protection. Unfortunately, for some customers this can be too confusing as they don't know what they should allow or block.

IDS also adds improved security by blocking known attacks but this really shouldn't be necessary to enable as long as the firewall is setup correctly in Learning Mode.

The behavior blocking (Handling of Unknown Programs) also improves security but will also prompt for many legitimate applications. If a customer is unfamiliar with the applications running on their system then it's very likely that they may block something they wouldn't want to with this feature. This is why this feature is under an Advanced section as we only suggest it for advanced users. This feature just monitors very specific settings and behavior. You can see all of the available monitor types by selecting the "Let me specify how to handle unknown programs" option then clicking the Settings button.

Basically, these features aren't necessary but do provide improved security. We wouldn't want every customer using them as some customers are just not familiar enough with computers and security to understand how to use all of the features and this could cause more harm than good. We do however want to make these features available to users who want them and would benefit from them. This is why some of these features are included but disabled by default.

    Hello Nick!

Do you have any information about the new MX-V for JavaScript? When will be out of beta?

And any chance for a new integrated antispam in the Premium version?

I just ran the antilogger test from SpyShelter and it failed, so that just answered that question for me.

The MX-V for JavaScript is still in beta as I believe there were some issues that had to be worked out. I believe we have a new beta definitions that should be available within the next couple weeks.

I haven't heard of any plans for anti-spam to be implemented in any specific releases but I do know it has been requested several times in the past and is on our back log of features to consider for future releases.

Great reply Nick, agree with you not enabling these features by default, and having them as an option for more advanced users, like us on here.

Used Vipre in the early days, found it to be top program. Might give the premium one a go. :thumb:

IMO, Spyshelter's and Zemana's A-KL tests are pure marketing tools. AFAICT several (if not all) AV's have failed it. IME, Vipre blocked it from running but of course you want to see it in action. So I allowed it and of course Vipre failed it. But that makes me think: How come would you let a keylogger program (cause that's what the test app is) even run? If your AV is telling you not to run the app, why would you allow it to run? Of course the AV will fail.

So, don't trust self-developed test tools from any vendor. Why would they want you to realize your current security setup can do fine without their software?

    Pros:

Very light on system, fast scan, good detection, good/simple GUI.

    Cons:

Few bugs with the firewall, sometimes blocks Google Chrome updater(i use the firewall in learning mode) and sometimes installing the definitions update takes too much time and completly locks the computer on Windows 7 x64.

well no, thats not completely true, while yes they are for marketting purposes, there is a legitmate reason you may allow a program through the first alert to run because you may very well think that it is a legitimate program, but if the program uve allowed to run (remember the alert was just a run alert, nothing else) it would be good for the AV or HIPS to detect if the program that you simply allowed to run is performing any malicious actions (such as logging your keystrokes) and then report it to you to see if you really do trust this program or not.

perhaps VIPRE got stuck during scan. By default VIPRE is set to make a full system scan everyday at 1am. There's been reports about VIPRE getting stuck scanning temp files over and over. Try changing the time for the scans or disable them (the GUI will show a warning though).

Anyways, as mentioned above posting this issue @ Sunbelt Support Forums will be the easiest and fastest way to sort this out! They have a great tech support team leaded by Nick Hallin. :thumb:

an inordinate amount of disk io on an idle machine? no, i've never seen that. if the computer is being used though, disk reads should be expected unless vipre's disabled.

that's a different metric. your image shows "disk io reads" which is different than "io read byes" - yours is the number of times it's read stuff from the disk, not the qty of bytes it's read from the disk
