I don't use web scanning either and can appreciate the way AlexDBR is doing his testing.

I don't fully agree with you... In reality is common to see multiple infections on system that has been compromised and trojan droppers/drive by downloads sometimes deploy multiple payloads. This is a test of endurance, not only detection...

    And speaking of AMTSO guidelines:

I am sure the rest of those guidelines are useful for AV testings labs... But I don't have the necessary resources & tools to validate the samples like that or to test on real machines (because malware may behave differently under VM/sandbox conditions). So take it or leave it...

Regarding the samples missed with web scanning/protection off, rather than turning on web scanning/protection and showing it again in the video, you could put those details in the end-of-video summary (Nod32 with default settings, 18/20 for example).

But then again, you're taking the time to do the tests, so they're your tests.

    WOW !!!

I'm really astonished by the methodology employed by this gentleman to test AVs.

He apparently thinks that with these new kind of blended threats and Malware [Fake AVs specially] morphing at a rate of 100 new variants per hour
AV vendors should ONLY rely on the Core Scan Engine when there are security experts demanding a different approach to fight Malware like for example: better heuristcis, HIPS, etc.

I use NOD32 v.4 and that's no secret for anyone here at Wilders but, man, disabling the Web Access Protection also disables: SIGNATURES, HEURISTICS, ADVANCED HEURISTICS, Adware/Spyware/Riskware, POTENTIALLY UNWANTED APPLICATIONS [the ONLY setting not ticked by Default is POTENTIALLY UNSAFE APPLICATIONS which I wonder why].

What would you expect by disabling and therefore castrating NOD32 at such level? Would you expect it to catch everything you throw at it?

I'm seriously thinking about stopping watching those videos posted by amateurs over at You Tube due to lack of credibility.

    Regards,

    Carlos

    Agree, he decapitated NOD32.

For me this test is worthless....

If you are going to test, the only way is out of the box default settings. Anything else is BS.

I agree default settings is best, but seeing how strong the antivirus component alone can be useful, say when searching a USB drive full of multimedia, and the user launches an .exe. A web scanner wouldn't block that file, only the AV component would (as far as I'm aware).

I agree, Nod by default is a strong and exceptional security program, and I don't base my judgement of Nod's AV component alone on this one test. Nor should anyone else. Because the next test it might have close to a perfect score.

Thanks for the feedback. There's always room for improvement...

I will redo the tests with the default settings and I'll also show the results with web scanner off and also with highest heuristic level.

firzen771, the themes are called RevoBlack and RevoBrown and you can get the here...

EMOTION CONTROL.. Don't like it - don't watch it!
    Keep the thread positive.

Alex did a great job and maybe it happened Nod got crippled etc. so be it, one test isn't a final judgement over a product.

Again Axel, you'll get flamed by fanboys and other's will over argue a point they feel is important and try to hijack the thread. Don't bother trying to answer them all.

    Keep them coming.

Which one from the tested 4 is recommended to use on a desktop. Is there one which is more appropriate in the business field and another one at home for personal occupation.

Why vipre missed some malwares, I heared that the core engine wes enhanced. Is this because it didnt relied on signature database.

I notice that you select "Run" from the save dialog rather than "Save to". Most people would chose the Save option. Can you test to see if the malware is blocked as effectivly when the download is saved rather than run?

I recommend NOD32 retesting... if on web AV component "advanced heuristics" is ticked by default ... then on "file system AV" should be ticked also and retested without web AV (go to 0:24 of video and enable/tick "advanced heuristics on file execution")

I agree, Eset needs to be redone, and soon. The longer you wait the more unfair it is to them for people who read this thread and form a negative opinion based on inaccurate testing methods. Chop-Chop

As I can see by your avatar, you changed to NOD32. What made you change to NOD32 now?

    thats very observant of you.;)
A paid 4 user license out of my own pocket pretty much sealed the deal on avatar changes for the future.

Id love to see a more indepth review and detection test for VIPRE. I havent been able to find an un-biased legitimate review other than your other video. I did a piece on my blog for VIPRE and Id like to add some more to it.

You should be seeing VIPRE included in several comparative tests very soon. From what I've been hearing we had been waiting for the 4.0 release before participating in these tests and now we're very near the top of the list. You should be able to see these results shortly.
