And before I forget to mention, the fast emergency solutions provided by Starbuck and Fred Flintstone are FREE too: both guys are real professionals, graduated/full qualified malware hunters and security experts, very capable folks and always pleased to help people. :isay: :shifty:

I apologize about anything that may have seemed irresponsible but I was trying to help her, I have recovered her hard drive and her computer runs slow but at least it is working much better than before.

Please give me a break, I'm not a expert at this at all, I am learning and she was willing to give me a shot.

You can backup all data via any suitable bootable CD and the format.

Another option is repair install of windows from a windows CD.

She was willing to give you a shot because she trusted you and relied on your capabilities.

Malware removal is a job for well trained people, these folks are spending every available free minute into their training on specialised malware universities, and all this during a considerable long period. If you have the serious intention to help people to get rid of malware on their machines you should follow such training and maybe the day will be there you will be a qualified and graduated malware hunter. Maybe, just maybe.

The malware removal job isn't a job to practise experiments, it should be considered as 100% serious and dedicated.

Well, this need ramped up as the kids and I started to migrate to purchased/download only music. In a short time that can become a rather valuable asset; not to mention digital pictures, legacy cooking recipes, and so on....

My "simple" solution of periodic backup to external drives quickly gave way to an HP MediaSmart Server (although a myriad of NAS devices fill the bill very well) for my home (and a Time Capsule for my older son while at university - direct Mac support for the MediaSmart server is arriving soon...). This type of automated/unattended solution is really what one needs to implement if they have a significant dependency on things in digital format.

Help is better than walking away when a person is in need.
Like all of us who have faced something unknown, we know a better solution once we're through the process once.

If her PC is abnormally slow, I'd take a second look at whether there are any unusual processes running. Use Process Explorer, it's a decent and simple tool.

It all depends upon the situition. The data for a businessman for exmple may be worth millions and I will not even touch such a PC.

On the other hand, I have so many dummy PC users who get their PCs fully format every 6 months or so as a routine due to malware problems, slow downs etc etc. I will not hesitate to clean such a persons PC if ever I get a chance because after all the PC was going for a full format.

In most of these cases I will do good rather than harm.
