    Hello Howard,

Thank you for choosing Acronis Disk Backup Software.

Please accept our apologies for the delay with the response.

Yes, you are absolutely correct. Acronis True Image utilizes it's own drivers to allow Windows recognize an image as a volume. The drivers for mounting image archives provide low level API for mounting image archives in Windows and assigning drive letters to them. API is the abbreviation of application program interface, a set of routines, protocols, and tools for building software applications.

In Windows 2000/XP/2003 the drivers are loaded and registered as a bus driver, an upper filter and a filesystem filter.

In Windows NT the drivers create a device object for the drive and handle requests sent to it. It uses the same filesystem filter driver as with Windows 2000/XP/2003.

In Windows 9x/Me the drivers are implemented as a port driver.

    The image mounting files are:

    timounter.dll
    system32\drivers\tifsfilt.sys (Windows NT/2000/XP/2003)
    system32\drivers\timntr.sys (Windows NT/2000/XP/2003)
    system\iosubsys\timntr.pdr (Windows 9x/Me)

    Thank you.
