It said that avast will expire soon and after I clicked on the red thing that popped up, am I supposed to click "Install Now" where it says Free version if I want to continue using the free version of avast even if I currently have the older version?

Download the newest version 5. It will uninstall 4.8 for you.

If you need to register version 5, it has a 'register' feature in the main interface, allowing you to enter a few details, and it's registered.

The previous version required you to receive an email, copy and paste the details in etc, but this new version is good to go.

When you open up the new version, go through the settings, and set the virus definitions and the program to update automatically, then you won't get any prompts, just always using the latest program version.

Is ver 5 stable yet? Early builds were a problem.

It's still going through growing pains, but the current build (418 ) has cleaned up the vast majority of problems from, say, 377, which was the first public "final" release.

(Edit, off-topic) All these years on the internet, and I still haven't learned not to use "8" (or several other characters, for the same reason) as the final character within parentheses, which of course most places just create smileys.

When I was trying to register, I couldn't fill out my name and my email address and I made some typos since my computer was freezing so I exited it out and when I tried opening up the register again, just the 2nd part popped up only where it asked for my country, why did I choose avast etc. It did say the name and the email address were required in the beginning when I saw it so thats why I tried opening register again in order to correct my infos, but the name and the email section didn't come up anymore..just the rest of them came up only. It does say I'm registered but would it affect when I re-register after this one expires which would be next year? or am I ok?

You'll be fine. You'll receive a warning if your subscription is out-of-date.

And if it was out-of-date, and you couldn't re-register for some unknown reason, you can always go to start, control panel, programs (or add/remove programs if using windows XP), and uninstall avast. Then you can download it again.

    No need to stress.
