Update Notifier

Just a heads up to anyone not aware of this rather good update notification freeware I stumbled upon a while ago.Similar to the likes of Sumo and the Filehippo offerings it has a very comprehensive database.

Yes I found this totally by accident and it's the best such product I've tried to date.

 

I am currently using Secunia PSI. But I am seeing a few people starting to use Update Notifier. I've had a couple of windows that popped up saying Secunia PSI has stopped working. So I am wondering if anyone has had any problems with Update Notifier? Its got a real nice looking inter face to it. RSpanky

 

I've experienced no problems at all so far.With similar utilities in the past I'd have issues with incorrect versions displayed,not once with UN.

 

But it doesn't cover windows updates?

 

No it doesn't,it's purely for installed applications at the moment.

 

If this board had "reputation" i'd lay one on you, really great app! I'm surprised at how extensive their application library is.

I'm strict with my Windows, Adobe, Java and vulnerable type updates but slack with regular programs because i have so many so this is perfect.

I've just tested it, and one application I have is incorrectly flagged with an older version of the software. This is listed on their site under the older version number, which is possibly why it's showing up like this. However, I thought it should read the files installed on one's system correctly.

 

Which application? Update Notifier detects AVG 8.5.329 as latest version, but I'm running AVG 8.5.387

 

This program. On their site they list the latest version as 7.77; it's now up to 7.8, which is installed, but when I run UN it shows 7.77 as installed. I actually had 7.78 before upgrading to 7.8 as well.

I did email them through the UI about this a few days ago, but have yet to receive a reply.

 

The same goes for AVG - I will inform them about this problem

 

Tried this out. Works pretty well. I had some out of date programs and I didnt even know it.

 

Looks like i'm more efficient in terms of support for SUMo ;-)

 

What about secunia PSI? I installed it a week ago and like it.

 

Secunia PSI is good for checking for Windows patches and listing applications it knows about that may have vulnerabilities; it doesn't list all the programs you have though.

An update on Update Notifier: I got no joy from emailing through the UI, but did submit a message via their website, and received a reply saying they've corrected the version info of the program I was talking about. Funny how one worked and the other didn't. Maybe you need to be signed up to use the email function in the UI.

 

Did anyone else also get this information?

 

Yes - I haven't been able to connect to either the application or the website for the past 24 hours. I hope it's just a temporary problem.
