hello.. i just wanted to try ms vista, but i dont want to delete xp. so i want to install vista on another disk, but.. i installed acronis disk director 10 and os selector too.. but i cannot see xp in os selector.. i tried everything, i also tried to edit bootwiz.oss file, but nothing happened..
    i got 2 discs

    disc A is split on 2 partitions (C: & D:)
    disc B is split on 2 partitions (H: & I:)
Win XP is installed on C:

and i want to split I: on two partitions (I: & K:) and install Vista on K:..
ok i can split disk, but that's all.. i'm not it expert or something, so I don't know, where is problem..
when it asks for restart, i press ok. os selector load, but there are 3 Unknown Systems..

this is bootwiz.oss file, which is on C: partition..

    Code:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>

Does the first Unknown menu entry boot into XP?

Is Vista currently installed or is XP the only OS installed at this point?

Did you install OSS from XP or from the DD CD?

Since only XP is installed, only the first "unknown" entry is correct.

This thread outlines the basic changes necessary: Windows XP detected as "Unknown"

Read through it and post back with what you've tried (you said you tried to edit the BOOTWIZ.OSS file).

    -----------

Was XP installed on the computer using an XP installation CD or was it an OEM installation ("brand name" computer, came installed, etc.)?

it's ok now. i just installed vista on another partition with no oss or something.. but it's funny, because vista is on K: and when i boot into vista, it shows that vista is on C:... but i don't care, everything works..
    thanks for support MudCrab..

if you want, you can delete it..

Vista seems to default to assigning the C: drive letter to its partition. XP would usually do this if the partition existed at the time of installation, but if you created it using the installer, the XP partition would be assigned a drive letter after any already assigned drives (the XP partition might be E: or F:, for example).

Since you have Vista on the other internal drive, are you using the BIOS to change which drive boots (the XP drive or the Vista drive) or are you using Vista's boot manager (selecting between Vista and XP at startup)?

If XP was already on the computer and you installed Vista normally, then Vista is booting from the XP partition (you can verify this in Disk Management - the "Boot" partition).

Done this way, it requires boot repairs and possibly other "tweaks" to get them separated. If one is going to use OSS (or any third-party boot manager), I recommend avoiding getting any Windows boot manager involved in the multi-boot setup than to try and "fix" it afterwards.
