Unable to create 4 primary partitions....

I have a external hdd with 3 primary partitions, when i go to create another partition it automatically creates an extended partition. I though there was a limit of 4 primary partitions or 3 primary plus one extended.

So how would i go about creating the 4th primary partition?

Maybe try Partition Wizard.

 

Are you using Win7 or Vista?

If that's true, then your 4th is your extended -hence the logical part-whether you want it or not, it sounds like to me.

While I don't normally create more than one primary partition on one drive, I have never put more than two on. But, I do create primary partitions on all drives I have (regardless of if the drive is one partition or many). I had 6 drives on one motherboard (because I could) and I always made sure when created partitions, the other drives were physically unplugged. Then you plug them back in and continue about life.

Use diskpart.exe from the command prompts with the command

"create partition primary"
