Professor Anderson said people were discussing the idea of making computer vendors ensure "back door keys" to encrypted material were made available.

A Home Office spokesman said: "The Home Office has already been in touch with Microsoft concerning this matter and is working closely with them."

USA still the best. But barely.
Maybe they're just asking for a 2nd or 3rd backdoor.

I meant "old news" in the sense that I'd already posted a link to that article in this same forum. It's also "deja vu" in that it looks like a re-run if the USA "Clipper Chip" fiasco of the mid-90s.

But as you correctly observed, any back door renders any encryption system worthless. Especially as quite often "the bad guys" and "the authorities" can often be one and the same as we head towards a police state.

It baffles me why the authorities are so paranoid about encryption anyway, since once we have compulsory ID cards, crime will be completely eliminated, won't it?
