When I click on ublock origin I see two columns. I also see "++" or "+" or "-" in some cases. There are also colors on the left side of the popup for some of the rows. I cannot find any documentation that tells me how to interpret what I am seeing. I get you can adjust the sliders but beyond that I am lost. I can't find this on the Wiki. Any ideas? Thanks.

Yes, that's dynamic filtering enabled. It's described in link that I posted. If you don't use it, you can disable it by unchecking option "I'm advanced user" in uBlock settings.

I tried using dynamic filtering (3rd party) and discovered upon going to the link you mentioned that no pretty pictures showed up in the documentation. I turned off 3rd party and voila - the documentation shows the pictures and answers my question. Shot myself in the foot and blamed the foot. Thanks.

the plus or minus (+ / -) shows the amount of allowed or denied data (+/++/+++ <> -/--/---)
right column is domain related, left column is global.
please read the wiki for that, it is all explaind

uMatrix is more granular, in special for content like scrips, popups, plugins and frames
it makes uBlock not futile but since most advertisings are called by scripts uBlock has less to do.
and uMatrix shows blocked sites more easily than uBlock.
