Running 2 real-time AVs at the same time? It's the same old story/debate during such discussions: Theory knowledge vs personal practical experience. Sometimes, both are co-related and at other times, the 2 can't just meet eye to eye.

Why not think of it this way: Running more than 2 AVs at the same time is as possible/impossible as having 2 girlfriends/wives at the same time (or more if you will). Whether or not the 2 are going to play 'nice' or have a 'cat fight' depends on several factors/variables..e.g.

    a) Are the 2 of the same mindset?
    b) Are both 'tolerant' of the other's existence? Or did you 'hide' one from the other?
    c) Are they both willing to share your love or are they both fighting for your sole attention?
    d) Do you know how to 'tame' each one of them according to your requirements?
    e) Do you know how to set 'exclusions' so that the 2 don't clash with each other?
    f) What happens if both are giving birth at the same time?

You can think of the rest yourselves:p...

Whether or not you're going to take the 'risk' of trying out the "experiment" pretty much depends on your personal judgment and attitude. Sometimes, you might just be plain lucky and manage to stay alive 'handling' 2 girlfriends (oops, I mean AVs) at the same time. Either that or you're a super fantastic Romeo or a capable playboy. But there's also the scenario of the 2 having another affair behind your back...and/or ditching you at a later time (aka BSOD/crashes on your PC) The risk is yours to take...

Otherwise, you might just want to stick and be 'loyal' to 1 so that all your love (aka system resources) and $$$ (stability of the PC) stay pretty much intact. There's nothing wrong with that. You can also add in some spice by being a small-time flirt with a few of your female friends (aka sandbox, light virtualization). That's another route that fellow guys here decided to take so that they won't get bored.

There's also the option not to have any girlfriends (AV) at all and be a full time solo. You can always get some 'on-demand' service when and where the 'need' arises....:p I mean Hitman Pro, VirusTotal and the likes. No naughty thoughts here *puppy* *puppy*

Well safeguy, why not read and relate to what delah has learnt? Or did you ;) But you are right with stories and hints - keep saying same old is what brings least punishment to the typical reader. Must be optimist to argue with that. May be the fact this is a forum only about security and such fooled delah in to believing some people would find his experiments interesting.

hi, just a thought, why not use one of the av products that uses more than one engine? they may use more memory etc, but they work together. just a thought!

    That's what I do. :p

For small files I use VirusTotal, for bigger files, I have Avast! in a virtual machine. When I need it, I fire up the VM, copy the file into it and scan the file. I don't see any need for an AV on my real system.

    No naughty thoughts here. *puppy*

    BINGO !

    In vmware i'm currently running 3 av's :D

Gdata (bitdefender & avast) + panda cloud av free :shifty:

I've been testing it for about an hour or so a day for the last few days and there doesn't seem to be any problem. The other av has been added to their exlusion list.

Testing 0-day malware, panda cloud has detected malware that gdata has not.

"Two (a/v's), or not Two (a/v's), that is the Question".

I wrestled with this same issue for a long time. Drove me nuts. Finally came to this conclusion. IMO, At some point, ya gotta have enough confidence in the a/v you're using or dump it and get another with which you do feel comfortable. Finally, I simply layered my security and avoided duplicating 'same type' protection which could cause any possible conflict.

Besides, in my experience, MOST problems occur due to unsafe behavior. All the protection in the world won't protect us from ourselves.

Now, I relax and 'Click' wisely... ;)

So that means you click on porn siteso_O It is safer to run through a bunch of porn sites then to click on daily event news. Thinking you are any safer because you have knowledge of were bad sites are is so 2006. It is now just a crap shoot and numbers game.

I have no problem with you analysis. I surely didn't mean to come across as "blasai". "Click Wisely" = I visit very few sites and use 'VirusTotal' Download/URL checks quite often always keeping a "Clean System Image" nearby. It's a shame that the web is becoming nearly unusable and undoubtedly will get worse. Browsing is now laden with 'mines' to numerous to mention. "Crapshoot" is quite appropriate. The bad guys are winning.

Well, I suppose the only way to assure no issues is to unplug and bury PC in the back yard and cover it with cement and sometimes I am tempted.

AND, no porn sites for this old fart. :D
