50 confirmed dead on the island of Nias,

    http://www.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/asiapcf/03/28/indonesia.quake/index.html

Tsunami warnings were put out and it looks like a small one developed and effected a small island near Australia.

Massive infrastructure damage has occured. There are fears of hundreds dead....

It's not being called an aftershock as of yet but something that was most definitely triggered by the massive quake in december.

Severity just been upgraded to 8.7 on Richter scale, extensive infrastructure damage with loss of life, but as yet no apparent tsunami effect.
FYI, On the Richter scale, 9.0 is 30 times more energy release than 8.0, and tsunami generation is dependant on several factors including

    magnitude - Above RS7.0
Depth of locus - in this case approx 19 miles according to USGS
Type of faulting -whether the fault locus produces movement at the seabed thus causing water displacement.

    Jock

    edit

USGS reported as having classified this event as an aftershock

    G'day! I'm Australian
Yeah, wasn't there an earthquake which measured 8.0 on the Richter Scale near the coast of Tasmania... don't know whether it was before or after the Tsunami, but there was recorded messages of one which was there.

    Davo.

P.S. Hope to God it doesn't happen again... :doubt:

Well, our good thoughts go out to them, it must be mind shattering for some of those who have still no dealt with what has went before! So many are in a state of shock and depression already, they really need hope, counseling, prayers and some kind feeling of security, they don't seem to be getting that!

Well, we can at least send our energy, prayers, or good thoughts, we can do something!

    Still.... it's kinda unreal!
