Read this excellent guide for building a BartPE disk http://www.mechrest.com/plugins/BartPEGuide/BartPEGuide.htm. This thread may also interest you https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=162424.

Power down the computer and external drive completely, then turn on the external drive and power up the computer and boot to the CD. I was having the same problem untill I did that and it worked for me.

Is your external HDD a USB drive or a SATA drive?

Is your CD-ROM internal or external? If external is it a USB CD-ROM?

Under BartPE, open up Acronis in Full mode.

    Select Backup

Even if the USB HDD is not shown in the structure tree, at the Command line at the bottom, type the HDD drive letter (ex.: E:\) and see if you get a drop down menu of existing archive(s). If so, type in a backup file name and make another one to see how it goes.
