This is why the US has such a huge trade deficit since foreign made goods are cheaper to be made overseas and the loss of the manufacturing industry jobs in the US. This is now the time of global economies unless you revert back to the protective tariff days of the past.

Since when did McDonald's start shipping audio players? Aren't they in the fast food business? Or are they diverging to other industries? o_O

Actually, cannibalism has been present since ancient times in different cultures. ;)

Perhaps so, but sometimes technology and politics are in the same "soup" depending on the country.

That's only one opinion, others would differ with you in the same way you might differ with some of my sentiments in that regard. It could also be argued Mexican's produce equally high quality goods as Orientals and in fact Mexico was one of if not THE catalyst or starting point of USA's outsourcing and other manufacturing industry moves to begin with, but let's stay On Point here if possible.

The concern originating from that article shouldn't be of any real surprise here though. The more NEW hardware for PC's that are produced are going to include Not Trojan's per say but other real innovations and techniques as well as likely piracy guards in the future if that's at all possible. This recent exposure is just an example. Who's to say what's going to come along with our new hardwares in the future?

That really begs the question: Is Brand loyalty a mental illness?

I am not sure that I totally understand the question. Do you mean that loyalty to purchasing Maxtor and Seagate hard drives is now short sighted because the product is manufactured in another country? Some people will stick to one car brand (say Toyota) whether it is made in Japan, US, Canada, Mexico, or anywhere else. RCA was a big name in TVs some 40 years ago. Now those TVs are made overseas and overshadowed by other brands.

Well, many purchase products from Big brand names primarily because brand familiarity is used as a substitute for product knowledge or expertize... thus being loyal for specific brands and then later getting screwed because of ones own laziness or ignorance for failing to do diligence...
