This is complicated problem here. I found a few virus's on my PC last night. 2 of them are Trojan_Briss.A and VBS/Psyme. I was not able to delete all of the 7 files, so I associated one of them with Acrobatreader which happened to be listed first in my program list figuring I could stop it. From that point on everytime I ran an .exe Acrobatreader would come up. I couldn't run Add/Remove Programs, because it's and exe. I deleted it and now when I run exe's it says they can't be found check the path, even though they are there. I was able to run programs off a local account until I got the brilliant idea of moving an installation file into a folder on that account and tried to run it. Which tells me anything I try to backup will carry this virus. We have a lot of family pictures and really want to try and save them. I even tried running an Update installation using the local account. Didn't fix it. I am able to launch some applications from DOS. I was able to run HijackThis from DOS. Below are the results:

start by fixing the file association for exes
    http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm

Run HijackThis again, push Scan and place a check mark next to the following items using your mouse.
Not all of these entries will still be present - but make sure you get the ones that are.
Next, close all browser Windows, and push the 'Fix checked' button in HijackThis

This one looks a bit fishy - but I'm not yet sure ?
    O20 - AppInit_DLLs: NVDESK32.DLL

Empty the TIF (Temporary Internet Files)
To do so use Control Panel > Internet Options(or right click the IE icon on the desktop and choose Properties)
Click Delete Files on the General Tab - place a check in the Delete all offline content box and then press OK

Delete all the files in (and any subfolders of) the C:\Windows\Temp\ folder

Reboot and post a fresh log after running adaware
    --------
    Set adaware up as follows
    - Under Ad-aware 6 > Settings (Gear at the top) > Tweaks > Scanning Engine:
check: "Unload recognized processes during scanning."
    - Under Ad-aware 6 > Settings (Gear at the top) > Tweaks > Cleaning Engine:
Check: "Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."

    Press "Scan Now"
    - Check option "Use Custom scanning options"
    - Check option "Activate In-Depth Scan"
    - Press "Select drives\folders to scan"
    - Select the active partition which is usually C:

Now press "Next" to let Ad-aware scan your drives...
It will find a number of "bad" files and registry keys.
Right-click in that pane and choose "select all"

    Now press "Next" again.
It will ask you whether you'd like to remove all checked items. Click OK.

    Finally, close Ad-Aware, and reboot.

I updated the registry with all of the files. I checked the entries you told me to and fix checked them. Then I emtied the TIF's including cookies and offline. I tried to delete all windows temp files and subfolders. I could not delete these 4 files
    Perflib_Perfdata_6a4
    Perflib_Perfdata_7cc
    Perflib_Perfdata_6b0
    Perflib_Perfdata_ec

I rebooted andmade sure the adware settings were correct. It found nothing. Here is my new HijackThis report. I still cannot open exe's in windows. It still says they are not found. My exefile Shell Open Command Value Data is "%1" %*.

Let's get rid of some not so necessary stuf with HJT - but save the backups - you may want to put some of these back
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSConfig] C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe /auto
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SRFirstRun] rundll32 srclient.dll,CreateFirstRunRp
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SchedulingAgent] mstinit.exe /firstlogon

    You're running a selective startup - so I can't see everything
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSConfig] C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe /auto
Turn it off by running msconfig - but don't reboot
Make a fresh scanlog at that point

    Additionally, post the StartupList log.
In HJT use Config > Misc Tools, put a check in "show minor sections" and then click "Generate Startuplist".

I deleted the msconfig entry before running msconfig and it will not let me generate a startup log. It seems like it's working, but notepad doesn't come up. The reason I'm running a selective startup is because I was trying to limit the startup processes bringing up Acrobat reader. Do you want me to enable everything in my startup?

Are you simply typing notepad or notepad.exe

Can you look in C:\windows and c:\windows\system32 for a 'notepad.com'(instead of exe) and can you tell me the file sizes for notepad.exe (both folders) ?

You are comfortable using the console

    -----
Yes - I did want to see everything enabled

Is there a way you could email (perhaps right click and zip) the nvdesk, dll so that I can check it?

I am trying to email you, but its being rejected. Both windows and system32 contain notepad.exe at 65 kb's a piece. I am very new to hijackthis. First time user.

I am trying to get this startuplistlog for you as well as the file NVDESK.DLL. I even tried pasting the contents of the file. Too much data. Do you have any suggestions as far as what to do next. Please let me know. Thanks for helping me.

I'm not entirely sure what's up with the exe file association
What shows for an '.exe' entry under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
What you could try is to reassociate it with EXPLORER.EXE

The drsnsrch.com/sidesearch.cgi?id= stuff should have been shopnav
    http://www.kephyr.com/spywarescanner/library/shopnav/index.phtml

the Win Server Updt should have been
    http://www.kephyr.com/spywarescanner/library/ieplugin/index.phtml
try unregistering the dll's according to
    http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/adware.ieplugin.html

    msbb should have been
    http://sarc.com/avcenter/venc/data/pf/adware.ncase.html
