Hello all, yesterday my IE browser was hijacked with popups and other executables. Then I scanned my PC with housecall's virus scanner and it found 23 infected files, mostly from troj revop.a, it also found a few called troj stilen.a and troj small.go (are they all the same thing?) I am running Windows ME, also cleared a few files with Spybot S&D.

Here is the HJT log below, thanks a lot for the help, I really appreciate it!

First download CWshredder from https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=14086 then Run it
Close all browser windows, click on the cwshredder.exe then click "FIX" (Not "Scan only") and let it do it's thing.

Reboot After running cwshredder and as soon as possible follow this advice:
Now as CWS Hijacks are normally installed via the byte verifier exploit in M$ JavaVM, just surfing a page with an infected applet can install it with no user participation. So once you’ve run the above, it is vital that you go here, click Scan for updates in the main frame, and download and install all CRITICAL updates recommended.

    then reboot &
Download and unzip or install these programs/applications if you haven't already got them. If you have them, then make sure they are updated and configured as described

    Spybot - Search & Destroy from http://security.kolla.de
    AdAware 6 from http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download

    Run Sybot S&D

After installing, first press Online, press search for updates, then tick the updates it finds, then press download updates. Beside the download button is a little down pointed arrow, select one of the servers listed. If it doesn't work or you get an error message then try a different server

Next, close all Internet Explorer and OE windows, press 'Check for Problems', and have SpyBot remove all it finds that is marked in RED.

    then reboot &

    Run ADAWARE

Before you scan with AdAware, check for updates of the reference file by using the "webupdate".
the current ref file should read at least 01R298 20.04.2004 or a higher number/later date

    Then ........

Make sure the following settings are made and on -------"ON=GREEN"
From main window :Click "Start" then " Activate in-depth scan"

    then......

click "Use custom scanning options>Customize" and have these options on: "Scan within archives" ,"Scan active processes","Scan registry", "Deep scan registry" ,"Scan my IE Favorites for banned URL" and "Scan my host-files"

    then.........

go to settings(the gear on top of AdAware)>Tweak>Scanning engine and tick "Unload recognized processes during scanning" ...........then........"Cleaning engine" and "Let windows remove files in use at next reboot"

then...... click "proceed" to save your settings.

Now to scan it´s just to click the "Scan" button.

When scan is finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose"select all" from the drop down menu) then press next and then say yes to the prompt, do you want to remove all these entries.

    reboot again

then post a new hijackthis log to check what is left

Ok, ran cwshredder, getting all critical updates now. In SP1 installation it is asking if I want to overwrite some of the files. Do I accept? (Sorry, don't know much about this stuff.)

Anyone know if those files should be overwritten? I'm such a newbie.

M$ updates shouldn't normally ask if you want to overwrite files as they only do that if the file on the computer is newer that the file you have downloaded through windows update.

That should never or very rarely happen

I would allow update to overwrite the files, but be prepared that one or more programs on the computer might not work as that program willl be looking for a specific version of the file that M$ has overwritten

Reboot into safe mode by following instructions here: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406
then as some of the files or folders you need to delete may be hidden do this:
Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
    Click "Apply" then "OK"

    Delete these files

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\pousd07h.exe
    C:\Program Files\pup.exe

    and Delete these folders

    C:\PROGRAM FILES\TV MEDIA
    C:\Program Files\Lycos
    then
    Reboot normally &

    Run ADAWARE

Before you scan with AdAware, check for updates of the reference file by using the "webupdate".
the current ref file should read at least 01R299 22.04.2004 or a higher number/later date

    Hi guru19,

You have one leftover to fix and then we will clean out the system restore.

Before you start, please unzip or move HijackThis to a separate folder of its own. The program will make backups to the folder it's in. These easily get lost in a temporary folder or a folder with other programs.

Check the following items in HijackThis.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497}_ - (no file)

    Reboot.

To clean out your System Restore, do the following:

    Turn OFF System Restore.
    1. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    2. Click Properties.
    3. Click the System Restore tab.
    4. Check the box beside "Turn off System Restore".
    5. Click Apply, and then click OK.
    6. Restart the computer. (You must restart your computer to clear the old Restore Points)

To Turn System Restore back ON.
    1. Follow the above Steps 1 to 3
    2. UNcheck the box beside "Turn off System Restore".
    3. Click Apply, and then click OK.
    4. Restart your computer.
    5. Then CREATE a new restore point.

Now post a fresh HijackThis log to be sure we got it all.

    Regards,
    Kent

    Hi guru19,

    Try this:
In IE click Tools >> Internet Options >> Programs >> Reset Web Settings...
You should be able to do that fix then if it is still present.

    Regards,
    Kent

No, It clears the home page and search page and sets them to defaults. You will only have to reset those pages if you wish.

    HTH.....

Try fixing it with HJT again. The reset should allow you to fix it now.

    Hi guru19,

I have never seen this before as what I have told you so far always works. One of the other Experts should be by here in the next 3 to 5 hours. I will be sure one of them sees this so we can get another opinion. It is a minor fix and does not compromise your system in any way, it is just a leftover that should be cleaned up.

    Regards,
    Kent

I have seen this a lot recently, I am sure it's something to do with the cws hijackers we have had problems with and even though the actual file is missing it still hangs on,

I think it's something to do with the _ at the end which signifies a space to windows so hjt doesn't recognize it and can't actually delete it

    we'll work something out

Maybe this will tell us what it really looks like:

    Click > Start > Run > copy&paste regedit /e c:\searchhook.txt "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\URLSearchHooks" >OK

Then find c:\searchhook.txt and post the content.

    Regards,

    Pieter
