    Thanks hany3

I been needing to find the proper place to air out my own findings for them to better review and resolve for all of us who see this version develop with more zest and less probs.

    Folks,

Had the complete lock-up at end of install, no other security apps except MBAM, traced to mbamservice.exe, killed the service and install completed.
So appears to be a conflict with MBAM.

I uninstalled TF 4 after a couple of days because it slowed down my browser speed.

Anybody know of any test results on TF or Mamutu? I need to be convinced that these behavioural blockers are effective.

Threatfire was tested and rated very highly by PCmag.com

    http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2301045,00.asp

This review is for version 3.5 The tester is aware of the new version 4.0, so there will likely be a new review coming.

    Thanks for that.

Interesting that TF didn't perform too well against keyloggers. I've just installed Mamutu and tested it against 2 of the tests in AKLT. While EQS and OA responded to each test, Mamutu stayed quiet. Perhaps Mamutu shares TF's weakness against keyloggers.

Yes, paranoid mode is on. Wouldn't have it any other way.

Just actually gone the other way.

Removed TF4 as it was killing my browsing and each popup was preceded by a hang and prolonged hard drive activity.

Restored my Mamutu licence in the meantime.
Will monitor for any updates to TF that resolves these issues.

    :)

FWIW, I installed TF4 on Vista Business x86 along side NIS2009. I'm happy to say the two are getting along fine. I had problems with TF3.5 causing hangs during web surfing, but so far I'm not seeing any slowdowns or stalls with TF4. I'm going to install TF4 on my XP box next (also running NIS2009) and see if I have similar results.

Let us know how TF 4 pans out on your XP. I know like others, that on my XP Pro this lastest TF 4 exhibits a serious stalling out on alerts and "lag". So much so that i turned strickly to MAMUTU now for Behavioral Blocking protection.

Don't get me wrong. TF 4 is proven to me much improved in content and proactive intervention which is a welcome improvement indeed, but IMO only it definitely needs some final coding refinements to become more immediate & responsive as opposed to "sluggish".

Looking forward to your results too.

I've been running TF4 on both XP and Vista for a few days now and I'm happy to say that browsing is not negatively impacted. I've only had a few pop-ups from TF and they seemed to come up pretty quickly, but I have not been really trying to test it's responsiveness. It's also been a while since I used Mamutu so I can't compare. I liked Mamutu, but didn't feel motivated to renew my subscription (there's a limit to how many licenses I can justify :) The main thing I can say is that compatibility with my system has greatly improved compared with TF3.5.

TF 4 could always say "whatta ya expect for free", but it is so very realistically close IMHO to being on-par with the likes of MAMUTU, that it would be in their interest to pit these together theirself and regard those results in both identifications (alerts) and performance ratios, then adjust or fine tune accordingly.

As much as i want to turn to ThreatFire 4, i also expect reasonable responsiveness such as MAMUTU easily offers.

    Re: threatFire 4.0.0.8 just released

By the way, 4.0.0.8 was released yesterday - available via Smart Update in the GUI. There's no mention of it in the PC Tools forum yet, so I don't know what has changed.

    Update 10/29/08
    threatfire 4.0.0.8

Db update fix among other minor tweaks.

There is an issue with Vista Home user where an auto update will not allow Custom Rules to be changed or added. Please Uninstall and Re-install to 4.0.0.8 for a fix.

I'm willing to sit on TF 4 untill it shows it's at least up to equal performance as my MAMUTU which is OUTSTANDING!

That being said, i'm very encouraged that PCTools developers are actively re-tooling Threatfire on a daily & weekly basis. It's nearing finally becoming worthwhile and useful again just like early CyberHawk releases were.
