This person I know has a question about XP's update shield.

She was installing some updates and restarted the computer when it told her to for finishing up the installation and the computer froze. She held down the laptop's power button and had to do a hard reset. When the computer started back up it said she had 5 updates to install on the yellow shield and she hit the install button and then the shield disappeared. Not knowing if they installed or not she went to the Microsoft update site and that told her she had only 1 update to get so she is wondering if the yellow shield will appear again for future updates.

 

Yes it will appear again when new updates is available.

Tell her to check her list of installed updates ("view update history"). Then she can check if all updates (the 5) were successfully installed or not. If not, they would be marked as failed or pending under status.

I have had the shield disappear during an update download, only to re-appear later in the same day where it finished and installed the update.
