    OK.
I have done all that and I still don't think it is right.

    How about Hard Disk Sentinel?

    Same problem.
    I get that error warning.

There has to be something causing it.

Do you think it is a Windows problem?
Do I have to adjust or reset something?

Is there some utility that I can use to fix it?

Sorry but it looks like you have a bad HD. I'd contact WD Support. Good luck.

Both Hard Disk Sentinel and IFW read your HD as 1678 GB. Disk Management reads it as 3726 GB. They should all be the same.

    OK.
    Thanks mate.

I might go and get another drive tomorrow even though this drive is not very old.

Check the next one before you start using it. All apps should read 3726 GB.

The current one is under warranty?

Which OS are you using? Do you have the latest BIOS?

What size is the HD in the BIOS?

I was thinking of checking the BIOS for the size. I haven't done it yet, though.
The drive is not very old. 4TB drives haven't been around long.
It is probably still under warranty. I don't know how to go about making a warranty claim.

    I am using Windows 8.1 Update 1 64-bit.

Could a virus cause drive sizing problems and lock all my files like it has?
I have never had a virus before.

I actually think that the hard drive is failing even though Hard Disk Sentinel is reporting it to be healthy.
I sometimes wonder how accurate Hard Disk Sentinel is because it always seems to report healthy drives.

I have seen it report 100% health on old computers. Some over 8 years old.

I suspect it is a firmware issue and was like this when you bought it.

OK. Even though it worked fine for many months?
    Can I update the firmware?

    This is weird.
I just used Western Digital Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for Windows.
Notice how it reports 4001 GB in the upper section and gives it a pass, but 1801.63 GB in the lower section?

You only noticed a problem when the data filled the 1.7 GB "area".

See if WD has a firmware update. I've never done one either.

The WD Tools app sees D: as 1801 GB and IFW sees it as nearly 4 TB.

The WD Tools app sees the HD as 4 TB and IFW sees it as 1.7 TB.

There doesn't appear to be any way to update the firmware for internal WD drives.

Old hard drives can last for years since they were better made back then with Quality control not done by the customer as it seems to be done today.

HDsentinel has shown my WD green drive dying slowly and now a seagate 1.5tb HD is slowly dying as well so it does show hard drives failing.
Not seen anything to do with Solid state drives though as yet.

Do a low-level format. It might be worth a shot.

try Low level format tool, it could take a good while.

    This is a nightmare.
I just bought another one of these drives, and it is doing the same thing.
It must be a Windows issue.

Or an issue with this series of drives.

Can you try it outside of Windows using BIBM? I can talk you through it. That will tell you if it is a Windows issue.

Do you have an IFL boot disk?

The trouble with my GIGABYTE GA-X58A-UD7 motherboard is that it doesn't show SATA drives in the BIOS, so I can't even see if the BIOS is reading it correctly.
    Yes, I have IFL.

I am thinking of trying another SATA controller, but why would it suddenly stop reading the full size?
I have the latest BIOS version.

OK. Boot into IFL and click Backup, Next, Full Backup, Next, Linux
Backup From... Choose sdb (your problem HD), Next

What is the size of the Entire Drive?
What is the size of the partition?
