I am Running Windows XP Pro.

I installed ESET Smart Security last weekend after uninstalling the Norton Security suite. ESET was working fine until today, and suddenly I was unable to get connected to the internet.

My Wireless adapter was communicating with the router, but it was never able to obtain an IP address.

From a Command window, if I typed "ipconfig /all", it showed the title

    Windows IP Configuration

    and nothing else.

If I tried to disable my wireless OR my wired ethernet adapters under Network Connections, it would hang.

It is like the TCP/IP stack was totally hosed up (nice technical term, eh?)

After searching several forums, I found and ran the following commands:

Reset Winsock entries to installation defaults:
    netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults:
    netsh int ip reset reset.log

after which ESET reported that the firewall was malfunctioning.

A reboot didn't fix it, but after uninstalling ESET, I am now able to connect to the internet.

Any explanations for the problems that I am experiencing?

    Regards,
    Steve

I had the same thing happen to me on Friday. Any ideas what is causing this? Does it recur?
    Thanks,
    Kurt

    hello,
i have this behaviour with a Windows XP computer. after startup i have to wait at least 3 minutes to get connection to the network, but, EAV or ESS (tried both) can get all updates from ESET servers.
i reported this "problem" 2007 but the answer is to update drivers... :thumbd:
