SUMo is useful, and an effective way to discover updated versions of the software installed on your system.

However, with each new version of SUMo, the developer seems to add on more ways to install unwanted Toolbars and Homepage hijackers. Next time you install SUMo, count how many mouse-clicks you had to do to avoid installing all the undesirable junk.

Frankly, I think SUMo's decision to bundle Spyware into its installer is incompatible with the security focus of the Wilders community.

Sumo is pretty descent software. When i scanned with it my portable apps folder it detected the most of them, i think more than Secunia.
But you could add an .ini or whatever file in the portable version to write its settings there

Here's a request...currently when user click on "Get Update", it opens up a page with links to search for the said software on FileForum and Download.com. Hope you can add these links for FileHippo, Softpedia and SnapFiles too...

For e.g, here's how the links look like when searching for Sandboxie:

    http://www.filehippo.com/search?q=sandboxie
    http://www.softpedia.com/dyn-search.php?search_term=sandboxie
    http://www.snapfiles.com/downloadfind.php?action=s&st=sandboxie

In addition, maybe you can add the links to the software homepage for common programs used like Adobe Flash Player, Adobe Reader, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, etc...if it's not too troublesome for you.

All the software I use has automatic update options. Why would I need SUMo?

You don't need to use it if that is the case. Some people turn automatic updates off and use programs like SUMo to do a one time check periodically against all the software it knows about. Some software don't even have automatic checks so you have to invoke that yourself, but more do these days if it is enabled.

If you mean the ninite updater, afaik it downloads and installs updates automatically for you but it's limited to the apps that ninite supports. And it's not free

By using built-in auto updates you'll know that you have an update to install when you intend to use the software. Time is wasted.
Thanks to SUMo you can anticipate / batch updates in order to be able to directly use software when you want to !
