First, I'd like to point out how nice the new message board is! Glad its back up:)!

I use EasyCleaner 2.0 to manage many things and recently took a look at the start up programs (never have looked before). I wasn't sure of the four that I listed below which don't show in a hijackthis log.

    Installed-1-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\MicroSoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\OptionalComponents\IMAIL

    Installed-1-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\MicroSoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\OptionalComponents\MAPI
    Installed-1-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\MicroSoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\OptionalComponents\MSFS

    NoChange-1-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\MicroSoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\OptionalComponents\MAPI

Also, I took a look at the startups in MSCONFIG after finding these. I found two interesting entries (along with those that show in a hijackthis log) whose names consists of 23 boxes(squares). Both are located in HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Windows:Run and the other "Load".

I'm not sure if these should be in these locations or if they are unnecessary or harmful but I don't want to fool with them since they may be important in starting up windows(??).... any advice would be appreciated. Thanks so much in advance!

    Hi mattyl,

Your HJT log looks clean. I am no registry expert so I will leave those answers to one of the other Experts.

I am going to have you use HJT to generate a StartupList. This should help diagnose your problem. Follow the steps below.

    Run HJT.
    Click "Config...".
    Click "Misc Tools".
Put checks by the following two items:
    "List also minor sections (full)"
    "List empty sections (complete)".
Click "Generate StartupList log" and then "Yes" to continue.
Copy and paste the contents of the log here.

    Regards,
    Kent

Thanks a lot kent for the quick response. Just want to let the other experts know that I'm not experiencing any problems (that I notice) but was just worried about the startup progs I found in EasyCleaner and MSCONFIG. Thanks again!

the HKLM entries are standard XP entries and OK

I don't like the look of the HKCU ones as they look & feel wrong

They may be OK as boxes and squares usually mean that the program name is either written in a language that your version of windows doesn't understand usually an asian language or is using a font that you don't have

have you installed any peripherals like scanners/cameras etc as their programs are often put in that section wrongly.

However it could wel be bad so We will wait till Pieter comes on and I'll ask him to look at it

Thanks a lot dvk01. The only extra peripheral we have hooked up is a hp psc 750 (printer, scanner, copier) and a motorola SURFboard cable modem. I'll check back later to see if Pieter was able to take a look. Thanks so much for your help and information on the programs.
