    Can you click Start > Run > copy&paste this command regedit.exe /e C:\findfiles.txt "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer" > OK

This will create the file C:\findfiles.txt
Post the content of that file please.

    Regards,

    Pieter

Not what I expected to find. (a "NoFind" entry)

Can you have a look at this article:
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;222029
and check for the regsitry entry described there.

Another thing you can try (although it's meant for XP)
Click Start > RUN > Type or copy&paste these commands (one by one followed by clicking OK)

    regsvr32 urlmon.dll
    regsvr32 jscript.dll
    regsvr32 wshom.ocx

    HTH,

    So I get this right:
You can start regedit by doubleclicking the file itself but you can't start it from the DOS prompt because you get the shown error.

    well close

i can start it by clicking on the regedit.exe and if i go to to c:\ and double click on command.com and type regedit then again it works

but if i go to start/run/regedit i get the above error

stranger still if i right click regedit.exe and create a short cut on the desktop then go to start/run/regedit its works fine and i dont get the above error

im totaly stumped i havnt got a clue what might be causing this

That is why I asked you to look for regedit.*

I suspected a file called regedit.com or another extension to be present that gets started.

If you do Start > Run > regedit.exe
    Does it work then?

    Regards,

    Pieter

Like I said before. There are only two options for this to happen.

Since you now tested one and still get the error, the only one left is that Windows gets the wrong regedit.exe first (one from a different folder)

Can you check that too please?

I seem to remember that the following order is %root%, %windir%, %sysdir%
Not completely sure about that though.

    Hi Pieter,

I really don't know if this might be useful (I'd better leave those things to you ;)):

At the following site is a tweak for ME-2000-XP, alas it doesn't tell about 98 :

    Apologies for interrupting !

    Hi FanJ,

When it concerns Windows 98 feel free to jump in anytime.
I've never used it, so you are much more experienced with it then I am. :)

    hi

i think i worked out what was causing my trouble i found a suspicious file in windows called write.exe now it looks excatley like word pad that comes with windows and when ya double click on it thats what it opens up but what i find suspicious is that it was in the windows folder and its not word pag coz the lagit word pad is called WORDPAD.EXE and is located in

    "C:\Program Files\Accessories\WORDPAD.EXE"

so i was wondering if somone wants to have a look at this file incase its somthing bad

odd thing is that when goodleing this file i couldnt find any refrence to it being some sort of trojen or what have you so and when i click properties it says its a lagit M$ file but im not so sure coz if it is why was it messing with regedit

    hi cursed ghost...

I cannot help with other problems, but, can point you in a direction to check that file you are worried about.

Scan it here with multiple scanners at http://virusscan.jotti.org/ by uploading it to their site.

    see what you get.

    Cheers, TAS

also a google on write.exe gives various results.

Compaq 3598 system has it as a driver
McAfee / Trend has it listed as worm

    etc.
