    Re: HiajckThis log

    Hi snowbound,

    Instructions for your friend. :)

Before you start, create a permanent folder on your C: drive (example: C:\HJT\ ) and move HijackThis.exe into the new folder. HijackThis must run from it's own folder (not the Desktop or Temp folders) as it creates backups in the folder it is ran from, so if you should delete something you needed, you will be able to restore it from the backups.

In Hijackthis, place a check beside the following items.
Close ALL browsers and any other programs, except HijackThis, and click *Fix checked

    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.mdg.ca

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SysUpd] C:\WINDOWS\sysupd.exe

(This is a resource hog and not needed in the Startup Group. Recommended to fix it too)
    O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE

(Optional to fix, but isn't needed at startup)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

    O14 - IERESET.INF: START_PAGE_URL=http://www.mdg.ca

(This is related to Windows Update but for some reason it's missing part of it. You can fix it in Hijackthis, then when you go to Windows Update site again, enable Active X to download any Critical Updates, and this line should fix itself again.)
    O16 - DPF: {9F1C11AA-197B-4942-BA54-47A8489BB47F} (Update Class) - http:/

Make sure you have Hidden Files and Folders Viewable
Click Start > My Computer >Select the Tools menu >click Folder Options >Select the View Tab.
Under the "Hidden files and folders" heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
UN-check the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
    Then click Yes.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key just before windows begins to load.

Find and delete the following listed in bold:

    C:\WINDOWS\sysupd.exe

Make sure you have the most recent version of Spybot S&D and/or AdAware. Links can be found here: here. Try running them again while in safe mode.

    Reboot your computer normally.

Use the Disk cleanup Utility to clean out your Temp folders. Disk Cleanup Utility

I am not seeing an antivirus running, so I would recommend a full system scan with one of these free on-line scanners: Free Services

Once you are sure your system is clean, turn off System Restore, then reboot your computer to purge old restore points to remove any infected files that would have been backed up in there: System Restore Instructions for XP. Remember to re-enable System Restore after a reboot, and set a new Restore Point

Then to learn how to tighten your security and prevent future infection, please read this: Why did I get infected in the first place?

Reboot your computer normally and post a new log.

    Regards,

    Re: HiajckThis log

New log, couldn't find the file to delete also downloaded AVG and a trojan was found, TROJAN-BACKDOOR.AGENT.BA in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\SQLF.DLL.

AVG couldn't do anything with it, so it is still present.

Also tried to fix this line,

    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.mdg.ca

several times but keeps coming back. His comp. is an MDG. ;)

    Hi snowbound,

Could you have your friend download the latest version of Hijackthis v1.98.0 from https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=12516

Create a permanent folder on the C: drive (example: C:\HJT\ ) and unzip HijackThis into the new folder. HijackThis must run from it's own folder (not the Desktop or Temp folders) as it creates backups in the folder it is ran from, so if you should delete something you needed, you will be able to restore it from the backups.

Scan with Hijackthis and post a new log. I'm hoping it will show a little more.

    Regards,

    snap

    Hi snowbound,

Have your friend download FINDnFIX.exe (2K/XP only!) by freeatlast, from ~snipped~ out link as tool no longer available at this time - snap

Double-Click on the FINDnFIX.exe and it will install a folder called FINDnFIX on your system (Do NOT change the fixed path.)

Open the FINDnFIX folder and double click on !LOG!.bat.
IMPORTANT! Before you run this tool please close ALL running programs and ALL open windows except for the FINDnFIX folder.

The program will take a few minutes to finish while it collects the necessary information, then it will create a Log.txt file.
Post the contents of the Log.txt in your next reply.

    Regards,

    snap

    Re: HiajckThis log

Well snap, did the Panda scan and sure enough it found 11 problems including Startpage, Backdoor Agent, ByteVerify and a few other nasties.

Panda cleaned everything but on reboot Spywareguard popped up saying there was an attempted homepage hijack(about:blank) and another AVG scan turned up Backdoor Agent again! o_O

Anyway, here is a new log,

    Hi Snowbound

May I suggest you (your friend) do the following:

To anyone other than Snowbound: do not use this thread to try to fix your system or anyone elses by copying it - this is not an automatic fix and requires the logs to be properly interpreted.

Download FindnFix.exe (2K/XP only!) by freeatlast from here:

    http://downloads.subratam.org/FINDnFIX.exe or

Double-click on the FINDnFIX.exe and it will install a folder called FINDnFIX on your system. Go to that folder and double-click on !LOG!.bat. The program takes a few minutes to collect the necessary information. When done post the contents of Log.txt in this thread.

PS Looking at the latest log (F0 and F2) it seems your friend is running HJT without the hotfix. Open HijackThis, hit "Config", "Misc tools", "Check for update online".

The list will produce a small database of files that will match certain criteria.
You must know how to ID the file based on the filters provided in
the scan, as not all the files flagged are bad.
Ex: read only files, s/h files, last modified date. size, etc.
The filters provided should help narrow down the list, and hopefully
    pinpoint the culprit.
Along with that, registry scan logged at the end should match the
    corresponding file(s) listed.
    »»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»

    Re: HiajckThis log

    Next step:

In the keys1 folder, double click on FIX.bat. You will get an alert of about 15 seconds before reboot - allow it to reboot. On restart, open Explorer and navigate to C:\Windows\System32 folder, find the SQLF.DLL file (it should be visible now). Highlight the file and using top menu, click Edit>Move to folder...

Select C:\Findnfix\junkxxx as destination. Move the file.

Open the FINDnFIX folder again and double-click on RESTORE.bat. When it is finished, in FINDnFIX folder, there will be a file called Log2.txt - post it's contents in your next reply.

    Re: HiajckThis log

So far so good - open the FINDnFIX folder again and open the Files2 folder. Double-click on the ZIPZAP.bat. It will clean the rest and will make a copy of the bad file(s) in the same folder (junkxxx.zip) and open your (friends) email client with instructions. Simply drag and drop the junkxxx.zip file from the folder into the mail message and submit to the specified addresses. This is important - your friend was infected with a newer variant that doesn't show up in the AppInit_DLLs key.

Please be sure to include a link to this thread in the body of your email. Reboot when done, then delete the entire FINDnFIX folder. Next download CWShredder 1.59.1, run it, hit 'fix' as opposed to 'scan only'.

    http://www.spywareinfoforum.com/~merijn/files/CWShredder.exe (a bit slow tonight :) )
    http://home8.inet.tele.dk/fbj/CWShredder.exe

Reboot when done. Run HijackThis, scan and post a fresh log.

    Hi FBJ :)

Thanks for all this. On reboot, still getting an alert form Spywareguard for an attempted homepage change.

Hi Snowbound - sorry about the delay in answering - I believe it's a timezone related thing (I've been asleep :) )

    The log is clean.

Could you have your friend rightclick the Spywareguard icon in the systemtray (SG) - click on Reports - scroll to the bottom and copy the last coupple of messages concerning startpage changes to the next posting.

    Hi Snowbound

Not really a threat - the two startpages are basicly the same (microsoft.com). Have you friend set his startpage as he likes it (IE, Functions, Internet settings), SG will warn him of the change - he should click "Keep new value".

    I believe that's it ;)

    Thanks again FBJ. ;)

Had a bit of a scare today as my friend said infection had returned.

I checked it and he was right but it was in System Restore. I forgot to clear it last night.

Disabled it, renabled and made a new restore point and all is well again. :D
