Ayone know which method of shredding is used by AVG AntiSpyware ?
(eg. Guttmann, US DoD 5220-22 M or others).

I suppose shredding of folders (directories) can also be done ?

    Regards.

Looking in my AVG AS (free) > Tools> Shredder offers the options 1 overwrite (fast) 4 (secure) or 10 (paranoid).
By comparison Ccleaner offers 1, 3, or 7.
    Eraser 1,3,7, or Gnuttman35.
Guttman is 35 passes. DoD usually 7, I think. I would imagine 4 would be more than enough to take care of confidential data.
    Sorry, I've rabbited on...

It really depends what your erasing, a single file; email or freespace. A single doesn't take long. I used to think A single pass of Pseudorandom Data was enough for wiping freespace till I tryed DOD 7 passes and came up with 1550 files just on C drive and I use Eraser v5.7, I rabbit on too. Sorry.

Thanks for rabbiting on. :D Seems Eraser is king, and I may give it a chance
on my 'puter. Carver, have you had any problems using the available
features Eraser offers ? The free-space wiping is undoubtably useful, but
there was a FAQ post complaining about the free-space being drastically
    reduced after running Eraser.

Sorry somewhat off-topic maybe. Will allow moderators to remove. ;)
