I am using ShowIP version 2.1., but I am not showing any ads being served up. What kind of ads are you getting? What version of ShowIP were you using?

I also run Adblock Plus, and the most I ever get at a website is a notification at the top of a webpage that they have detected that I use Adblock Plus, etc.

I also use a USB flash drive with Linux Ubuntu 12.04.4 LTS.

I'm using ShowIp but I've blocked access to IP2Info.org in my router and hosts file. It works as before. I have adblock plus and never see any ads from it.

    Some add-ons have behaviours which
may have not been intended by their developers
considering it happens to random users

I used to use Custom New Tab
until it started to show a tab of its own choice

We never saw any ads either because we use Ad Block Plus too. We were running 2.1.

What we did have was a PC that had a freezing page issue with Gmail. We finally tracked it down to either a plugged up Firefox profile or ShowIP interfering with Google. What made me suspicious of ShowIP was that one of the bad reviews on ShowIP mentioned issues with Google. We ended up dealing with both suspects by removing ShowIP and creating a new profile, After that, the PC was back to normal.

FWIW, I learned later that there is a check box to turn off ads in ShowIP but I cannot say one way or another that it's really turning off the ads or not.

After running across FlagFox, I don't really have any interest in returning to ShowIP. It delivers much more than just an IP address or a WHOIS.

I just received an e-mail from the developer
    (whom I had contacted)
it seems to be a simple issue with his host
    and he's working on it

I tried v2.4 briefly in Firefox 31.0. v2.5 has some bad comments at the Firefox addons site, but v2.5 isn't available now.

v2.4 seems to send data to a certain website (via HTTPS) only when your extension settings are such that it's necessary to do so. Its privacy policy mentions this. I didn't look into exactly what information is being sent though.
