when choosing an encryption program from a purely security viewpoint should i choose open source or a paid solution ?. i am aware that open source can be examined by anybody, but does a paid program offer any benefits ?.

the hardcore security guys say open source is the way to go, the rationale is that paid apps may have a backdoor or that authorities can bribe or insist on having the company unlock the hidden files. If in doubt use truecrypt and double password secret files with huge passwords and that will be ridiculously secure.
