    vBus,

With SP, you can just use the boot CD (which is a separate ISO download from the app, so you never need to install it). NOTE however...if you don't have the SP software installed on the system you are taking cold images with, you won't be able to use the SP HIR (Hardware Independent Restore) feature. HIR only works for (1) live images with SP or (2) cold images with SP with the SP software installed...it checks to see if it's "installed" on the taken image. If this is no big deal for you, than have at it...I am fine with it. If I got a new PC I would hand build the OS anyway. Hope that helps!

To be honest I don't fully understand what you just said there. I have Shadow Protect Desktop 4 with the recovery CD. However, I'd rather use the recovery CD to do my backup and restores rather than installing SP on to my system. Is this possible?

When you download the full ISO, that is all you need. Once burned to CD, it becomes the install CD, and the recovery CD.

You don't need to install the Desktop version if you choose not to, but the Continuous Incremental Feature is pretty nifty.

    Awesome thanks ;)

I have Windows 7 installed now and I'm just going through the updates.

While I am waiting I'm been looking for a free application which will wipe free space, ideally without having to install something in Windows. I have already downloaded and tried DBAN but this doesn't support my RAID 0 setup. I have also tried KillDisk for DOS but for some reason it doesn't boot.

I'm going to give this Disk Redactor a try.

He was describing a feature included in SP (as well as other imagers) that allows you to RESTORE a backup image to a dissimilar computer (different hardware config, different mainboard, etc.) rather than just the one the image was taken from. Apparently this feature does not work unless SP is installed (and licensed) on the machine you're restoring it to. All the other features should work just fine...

Yes, that is correct...sorry if it wasn't clear. When an SP image is restored, it checks to see if the application is installed on the image..if it is, you can use HIR...otherwise, all features are fine. I also just use the CD.
