Re: Giveaway of the Day - Shadow Defender 1.2

I noticed on gotd there is a x64 version, so that query is out of the way. Any SSD/trim issues with Shadow D or Time F? Assuming SD was always a free program, which would you prefer? I hope I don't start a war with that question, however, sometimes there are some basic differences (features) in apps that might appeal to some but not to others. Thank you for any input!

just what I was looking at!

    but sadly...
too bad. still, us$35 isn't all that pricey given the current exchange rates.

actually, do you know whether the program cost is a one-off?

off to check for myself :)

It doesn't work on my system ( Seven ): after installed and rebooted, it doesn't run: I use CIS, but sandbox was never enabled and I gave to DS all rights.

Re: Giveaway of the Day - Shadow Defender 1.2

There's a good review of SD by Ashraf who reviews many of the GAOTD programs:

    http://dottech.org/107370/windows-review-shadow-defender/

I find it interesting that he feels SandboxIE is a better solution than SD. I wonder what people here who have used different light virtualization software think about it? I don't mean to start one of those scary A vs B discussions :) just curious about the pros and cons of the different approaches. I used Comodo Time Machine for a while, but eventually became uncomfortable with the issues related to the MBR, backup and defrag, etc. I don't know if SD has these same restrictions. TIA

I think about this promo...after unpacking the archive we receive 3 files but one of them is important - Setup.exe...but why this setup file is so heavy...its weight is about 3 MB and the latest version mentioned on forum - 1.2.0.383_beta - has only ca 1,5 MB. What is inside this setup file?

@ ichito, it's the wrapper that GAOTD uses in their giveaway always (with .gdc file also).

I have both on my home pc.

Not sure who the reviewer is, but is not very professional to compare vs sandboxie..They are different programs...Maybe with Returnil..

With Shadow defender i can install/test every software that does not require reboot, programs with drivers etc..
The Commit feature is very useful also ..

Downloaded and installed but cannot tell if it is registered or not; it did appear as though it was activated. Is there a step that I missed? Thank you in advance for your reply.

You can easily separate the installer file from GAOTD to check/compare hash or original size of SD setup file.

    Same issue here.

How can you tell if it's been properly activated?

Looking at the "about" portion inside the program, it lists the version number and my name. Nothing else.

There is no mention of the program being registered or any indication that it is a trial version with an option to buy, or a box to input a license key.

Also, is this a lifetime subscription or is it the typical GAOTD no support or updates offered?

    Thanks

It seems that is not "easily separate the installer file from GAOTD".

majoMo, you can check in eg. Process Explorer (Sysinternals) the path of the file which is created after you start original Setup.exe.
Copy that file and change extension to .exe. That's it.

    Thanks. That's what I thought.

So in order to receive updates and support you would need to uninstall the program completely and buy from the software developer him self, as I can see no way to update this GAOTD version within the program. Why would you want a program such as this that you couldn't get updates or support?

    I must be missing something..

    Thanks again.

    My view entirely.

I dont need such a program.

If your just experimenting with software then toolwiz timefreeze is a good alternative.

But against malware, then i believe SD is stronger.

Giveaway of the day has changed the way it packages its giveaways. They are now protected with a new wrapper from Themida. More here.

That was it - not anymore.

This new wrapper uses the Themida® protection wrapper now.

In the case of the SD giveaway, when you run the wrapper, the SD install directory gets unpacked in the temp directory under 7zS****.tmp . You can copy and save that install directory for later use before cancelling the wrapper install.

For example because you can use it as long as you want (whereas the trial version is for 30 days only). :D

Concerning the support, usually you will not need it (moreover you would find help here in this forum or at http://shadowdefenderforum.com/).

Concerning the updates, I think that it is not always necessary to have the newest version. Especially for testing software even an older version of Shadow Defender will do its work in an excellent way.

I think that's all. In case you followed the GAOTD procedure for registration in the correct way, with the user name appearing in the sector "About" the software should be properly activated. Using a payed version of Shadow Defender since a couple of time, I also can only find my username and the version number when clicking on "About".

I grabbed it even though I will probably never use it.
