I have been considering using various security applications for my computer. I have only considered a an anti-virus, firewall, and anti-spyware application. Since I came to this site I have noticed that there are many more security applications as well. Are programs such as anti trojans and rootkit removers actually needed?

Additionally, I have had some trouble finding professional reviews of high quality for security applications. Can anyone recommend some to me?

    its entirely up to you.

one of my computers solely has an antivirus and firewall, and i feel fine surfing the web and playing online games. it all has to do with ur habits, comfort level, knowledge, common sense etc.

Recommendations for certain security applications depend on your knowledge. There are some good 'One-Klick' security applications and other which need detailed configurations which means a knowledge from your side. Also a personal feeling for some applications. So let us now are you are a beginner, advanced user or expert regarding to Internet, network and so on.

As a normal/common surfer without a network behind you can start with one of the AntiVirus applications which are mostly recommended in this forum. Regarding to firewalls get a feeling by trying out several. If you are not an expert don't test Jetico You will get crazy. Also forget so called HIPS. A freeware AntiSpy/Trojan remover could be for startup a2square.

So for startup use a AntiVirus, Firewall and a AntiSpy/Trojan remover (AntiVirus aplications lack in catching trojans/AntiSpy ware). That should do the job for a normal surfer which is not frequently surfing to Warez or Porn sides :D

What you need depends on you and your surfing habits.
A Firewall,AV,and AntiSpyware program are good for starters.Maybe that's all that you need.
AT programs that I think are quality products(based on my experince only):BoClean,Ewido, and A-Squared.
