Too much, but OK. What happened with the video acceleration?

So Frank - you ever install a video driver? That's what I think it's gonna take to get this thing back in order.

Go ahead and open the add/remove applet, there a reference for your Intel graphics driver inside?

You have the "drivers and utilities" cd that came with the computer? No? Not a problem.

One quick look Frank. Copy and paste this line below into your runbox:
    Code:
    regedit /e c:\filters.reg hkey_local_machine\system\currentcontrolset\control\class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    Followed by this one:
    Code:
    notepad c:\filters.reg
After notepad opens copy and paste the contents here.

We're almost there - hang tight!

From your first post Frank, is this the article you tried to follow when looking for filters?

I see you've got a lower sitting there.

    ========================

Humor me here, this won't hurt anything to try.

    Grab the primary dwnld here.

Extract to your desktop, then open.

Uncheck everything by ticking the red x down below.

Goto box 5 - registration center.

Tick "direct, programming, explorer and object."

Hit GO, let finish. Reboot and try a video.

If there's still no change, we'll do the driver and save a WMP rollback/install for last.

global you keep amazing me with your knowledge.I feel bad putting you through this.Didn't play, got this error don't know how to paste it.

error 126("the specified module could not be found")was encountered while calling load library(C:\Windows\system32\srclient.dll) This is usually caused by a missing or corrupt dependency,or a dependency not present in the path or the current folder (which is:C:\windows\system32)

I meant to add "ignore errors" because I don't doubt there are other parts of your system amiss.
Did you let it finish and reboot anyways? Oh and there is no knowledge, only ;) memory.

I've gotta ask Frank - what happens if your system bails? An on-hand install disk or no?

We're almost there. Answer all and I'll set'cha up with the drivers post ....

Should you change your mind, the Intel 82915G/GV/910GL Express Chipset v6.14.10.4410 is what's currently in place.

The 6.14.10.4543 is newer, described as a maintenence release, and the one I'd go with if it were me.

If you dwnld, and I know you'll be daring greatly - take the low road:

    dell_dwnld_opts.jpg

Whichever you go with pay no mind to Dells instructions - it'll run as the file names explain in this graphics pictorial.

I'm guessing you'll need to re-adjust your screen res by rt clking the desktop and selecting properties, no biggie.

If you were to decide on bgoodman's suggestion, look here. Make sure to read rest of the FAQ.

PS - That missing file refers to "system restore" - broken on your box, correct?

Doesn't the fact that the PC is working with VLC indicate that the problem is with WMP? Why would you need to replace a driver if the device (the DVD reader/player) is working?

Just a last comment frank47 and I hope you will not take offence as none is intended,,,,,

If you do not regularly image your drive now might be a good time to start. A simple restore of the drive with an image made prior to the problems beginning would have quickly gotten you back to normal. At least it would in every case apart from hardware failure,,,,, which it seems to me is clearly not the case since VLC and the drive is working fine for you.

Three questions then. Computer make and model? Does XP occupy the entire drive? Is there an additional or external drive available?

You'll wanna add whether this is sp2 or 3 and whether you know how to take a screenshot of "the active window" - NOT a printscreen.

There are lots of folks here who will be happy to help (myself included).

I would suggest that you begin by getting yourself an external drive to store the images on and pick a program to use to create the images. There are a large number of programs available many are free and many are pretty decent performers. IMO one of the simpler ones to use (and quite well respected) is Paragon Backup & Recovery Free Edition (Paragon publishes a range of products, I think the most expensive backup program in its line is $69). I have installed this free program on a number of friends PC who had never used such software before and they have had no problems using it at all. NO doubt others will suggest other programs.

You might want to start by taking a look at the documentation for the above mentioned program. Then start asking questions about what you are reading, and in no time at all you will be imaging like a pro.

You can find the program at http://www.paragon-software.com/home/db-express/

You might also want to take a look through the archives of this forum. The topic has been covered very well.

Yes, as long as you can connect it to the PC of course. How big is the old drive (and how old is it)? External drives are pretty inexpensive these days, you might consider checking on-line or in you local big box store. newegg.com is a good on-line source (example there is a 750 gig WD drive for $129, and its smaller than a typical paperback book). Below is the link to the newegg drive page, just be sure you are looking at an external drive unless you want to put a 2nd drive into your PC.
