Is it really necessary to secure delete the sandbox, especially if malware ends up in it?

Also, I see many people use Sandboxie along with an additional virtualazation program like returnil. Is this just for an additional layer of security, or does Sandboxie have a weakness?

I don't bother with secure delete. And I do use ShadowDefender, but not because I feel there is a weakness in Sandboxie. There are a few things that are clumsy running sandboxed, and yet I want to blow them away when done. Shadowdefender/Returnil/etc just makes it easier to do this.
