Router + software firewall (benefits/detriments)?

    I have a friend who has high speed internet and the companY's high speed modem with built in firewall. This person wants to know the benefits of also running a software firewall (like the built in Windows firewall). I think we understand that for outbound filtering there would be a benefit. I am just wondering what benefit is there for inbound, if any. Also, are there any problems/detriments?
