Nowadays almost no antivirus require a reboot anymore. Atleast the 10 I have tested the last months didn't require one, that were all the big guys.

I would appreciate a list of those 10. I like to try AVs in shadow mode.

Norton, ESET, Kaspersky, avast!, Avira, Panda (Cloud) and Microsoft to name a few. Also I can't remember BitDefender, F-Secure and G Data requiring a reboot, but I'm not sure about them. However applications might require a reboot on a different machine.

Because of some OS dependend concepts, G Data doesn't require a reboot on OS >= vista.
A reboot is recommended, so that G Data AV can take a closer look on things going on during start-up of an "unknown" system. Give G Data AV 2012 a try :)

It's available if you look hard enough. It's also on a few online stores AFAIK at that price or close to it.

New box packages are pretty cheap these days. Renewals, however, are a different story....

the suites are most commonly those that require restart. On vista AVAST ESET NIS KIS do require reboot and that might be due to the firewall component

On 7 they all don't, quite strange.

Windows 7 has an improved system of updating/replacing drivers compared to Windows XP and Vista.

KIS doesn't require a reboot to install on XP, pretty certain it doesn't on Vista/W7 either.

KIS does after the first update if you install a version without any of the big hotfixes.

The main premise is not being forced to reboot to install the software in order to trial it in Shadow mode. Updates/hotfixes are a different thing, many suites require reboots to update used components/drivers, but most of them can carry on working and receiving sig updates without the reboot.

WOW last ~Phrase removed.~ place ESET!
    Great job!
Intially I thought that PC World had an agenda against ESET but every computing magazine shows a sub par ESET performance and rating.
I guess time to switch to norton.

I think any test whose result differs so much from what is the norm for most other tests has to be treated with a bit of scepticism, results just seem rather odd

NIS does not require a restart on XP.

The performance of ESET here seems to be similar to Raymond.CC's test in relation to most others tested.

I have to say that I like to reboot my computer after the installation of any AVs because I have chance to see whether those AVs slow down my boot time or not.

Hmm.Tough Question.Anyway,IMO if the AV that I installed works perfectly for me,doesn't slow down my PC or surfing, why do I need to change?Even thousand or million of tests prove the AV has weak detection, weak performance or whatsoever but i am still not going to change my mind.It will always be one of my favorite AVs in my heart even when I am not using it.:)
