1. Checking for new alert and/or product messages (upgrades available, etc)
2. Uploading information about unknown files on your system; both good and bad. This is what the Virus Guard > Settings > Data Collection Policy does if you are participating.

#2 works by sending suspicious file and behavioral information to our server side Artificial Intelligence/Machine learning technology (Read: Cloud) that you can actually review in the same area by opening the "Upload Queue" link. The server analyzes this information and then updates all users from the cloud with both White (the file or behavior is actually valid/clean) and Black (malware, spyware, bad behavior, etc) lists to improve detections and reduce/eliminate as many false positives as possible.
