Reply problem

I have a recurring problem when replying to threads.

If I am already logged in I have no problem and everything seems very intuitive, but if not logged in then;

I read a thread,
click on 'post reply',
supply username and password,
Type a messsage to add to the debate
Post reply

I then get a box saying "please click one of the Quick reply icons in the posts above to activate"

I can't escape from that easily to get back to reading the posts but if I close down the browser and start all over again my words of wisdom (or otherwise) are recorded okay.

What am i missing/
