    Recurring Trojan Horse Dialer

    Hi,

As of last night I seem to have picked up a Trojan Horse Dialer. Running AVG Anti-Virus software identifies the infected file as a Trojan horse Dialer in C:\Documents and Settings\OWNER\Local Settings\TEMP\SVCHOST.exe and the software then claims to have sucessfully healed the file. However the problem keeps returning after logging onto the internet at which point it is being picked up by the anti-virus software again. I am therefore in a cycle of healing the file, logging on and having the warning reappear.

Having run Spybot:Search and Destroy nothing seemed to show up. I have therefore posted my Hijack This log below. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Before you start, please unzip HijackThis to it's own folder somewhere.
The program will make backups in the folder it's run from.
These easily get lost in a Temp folder and are an annoyance on the desktop.
You should definately not be running from the cache - right click on this download and save it somewhere, unzip it and then run it
    HijackThis

    Download Process Explorer)
Right click a kill the following processes
(process explorer will let you see which folder they are running from, and that way you own't confuse
c:\windows\system32\explorer.exe with the necessary and valid c:\windows\explorer.exe)

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\wintime.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\explorer.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\explorer.exe

Run HijackThis again, push Scan and place a check mark next to the following items using your mouse.
Next, close all browser Windows, and push the 'Fix checked' button in HijackThis

    Delete the following file(s):
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\automove.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\wintime.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\explorer.exe <= careful you get the correct file

    Reboot normally

    -----------
Download the latest version of Ad-Aware at http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/
After installing AAW, and before running the program, you NEED to FIRST update the reference file following these instructions.
    Now do the following:
    - Under Ad-aware 6 > Settings (Gear at the top) > Tweaks > Scanning Engine:
check: "Unload recognized processes during scanning."
    - Under Ad-aware 6 > Settings (Gear at the top) > Tweaks > Cleaning Engine:
Check: "Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."

    Press "Scan Now"
    - Check option "Use Custom scanning options"
    - Check option "Activate In-Depth Scan"
    - Press "Select drives\folders to scan"
    - Select the active partition which is usually C:

Now press "Next" to let Ad-aware scan your drives...
It will find a number of "bad" files and registry keys.
Right-click in that pane and choose "select all"

    Now press "Next" again.
It will ask you whether you'd like to remove all checked items. Click OK.

    Finally, close Ad-Aware, and reboot.

    Hijack this log

    Hi,

I seem to be having lots of problems over the past few days with recurring diallers. Thought I had got rid of them by follwing advice from one of the forum experts but now my homepage has been reset to http://213.159.117.134/index.php (cool web search) and the antivirus software is identifying Trojan horse downloader.small.6.I amd virus JS/Psyme. I clean these but they simply return. There seems to be an applet kicking in when I start IE and my PC is suddenly running slow, the control panel is unresponsive and some of my games have ceased working. Don't know if all this is related but my PC had been runing sweetly prior to this.

    My Hijack this log reads:

Set your Explorer up using the info in this link so that hidden and System files are visible
Also Uncheck the "Hide extensions for known file types" box

Find a way to destroy the C:\WINDOWS\system32\system32.dll file (might need safe mode after fixing)

Download and run CWShredder by Merijn Bellekom
Run it, press 'Fix', and allow it to fix all it finds.

    Run adaware

My Mcafee firewall is constantly asking me if I want to give C:\WINDOWS\System32\logon.exe access to the internet since it has changed.

Does this form of virus slow the general processes on the PC down because my machine seems to have gone from rapid to real slow since this thing hit. Even opening folders is taking a bit of time and I still cannot open the control panel (or if it does open it becomes unresponsive immediately).

    Thanks for your continued help.

    Could you please download appinit.zip
Extract the contents to a folder and double click the runread.exe (not the regread.exe) - this will produce a regread.log file which you can open in notepad
    Post the regread.log file here

    Hi,

    The regread log produced reads:

A handle was successfully obtained for the
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows key.
    This key has 0 subkeys.
The AppInitDLLs value exists and reports as 2 bytes, including the 2 for string termination.

    [AppInitDLLs]
    Ansi string : ""
    0000 00 00 | ..

it's too bad I can't see anything there

From the sites involved there is no doubt that it is cool web search related

I'm worried that I can't see your winlogon as well -- doing something here might be a tad dangerous

If you know how to recover to your last working config on a boot -- try this

    remove these entries (no browser)

How to start the computer in Safe mode
Restart into Safe mode and find this file:
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\logon.exe

Use the security tab on comf.dll and take ownership.
    Change the 'everyone special' to
'you> with Admin rights-> FULL control
Then try to delete it, if that fails try to rename
    it first to different name+ext.
    Example:
    logon.exe > blech.txt
    blech.txt > badfile.111

Reboot and run Adaware and CWShredder

    -------
as i said - you can end up in trouble doing this
